Job Description

The Nurse Practitioner, Department of Neurology/Memory Disorders - Georgetown University. This position offers the unique opportunity to combine research and clinical care as part of an interdisciplinary team in a dynamic academic environment. The NP recruits, cares for, and promotes retention of subjects enrolled in clinical trials of potential new treatments for Alzheimer's disease. The NP collaborates with community Neurologists, Psychiatrists, Primary Care Physicians, Study Sponsors, and Clinical Research Organizations to ensure quality of care and ethical treatment of subjects enrolled in clinical trials and studies. All efforts are carried out in adherence with FDA regulations and GCP guidelines. Other research areas include biomarker discovery, behavioral management, and diagnostic and assessment studies of dementia and related disorders. The NP supervises research staff and provides oversight to all trial related procedures. Additional responsibilities include engagement in community outreach and educational programs designed to inform the public regarding Alzheimer's disease treatment, care, and research opportunities.
As a professional staff member working within the Dept. of Neurology at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH), the NP maintains credentialing requirements as specified by MGUH. Clinical care responsibilities include proficiency in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer's dementia and related disorders. The NP develops treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines. The NP orders and interprets test results including labs, MRIs, PET scans, and Neuropsychological test results. The NP assesses, diagnoses, and treats patients referred for initial evaluation or a second opinion regarding a dementia diagnosis. Additional responsibilities include education of students, residents and fellows regarding Alzheimer's care and research. As part of an interdisciplinary team, the N.P. practices independently and collaboratively to provide state of the art care to patients with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders and their families.

Work Interactions

The NP will interact with the clinical, research and administrative staffs of the Memory Disorders Program and the Clinical Research Unit (where study visits occur). The incumbent will work directly with study subjects, study informants, study monitors and sponsors. The NP will oversee research assistants and research coordinators to maintain protocol compliance and federal assurances and to implement increasingly complex clinical trials. The incumbent will work within the MGUH Department of Neurology to provide clinical services to patients and their families. The position will work directly under the Clinical Coordinator and Director for the Memory Disorders Program in the Department of Neurology.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Board certification as a Geriatric, Adult, Psychiatric, or Family Nurse Practitioner (NP)
  • Master of Science degree in Nursing, and DC licensure
  • 5+ years' experience in clinical and research care (Geriatric or Neurology)
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and analytical skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Must be self-directed and able to work independently
  • Adapts to unpredictable situations in the patient care setting

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$80,429.00 - $157,238.93

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
