Position Summary
The Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks to hire a part-time Research Instructor (fixed term) faculty member. This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned workspace.

The successful applicant will act as program manager and Senior Prevention Epidemiologist in neuroimaging research. The candidate must demonstrate significant leadership by obtaining external funding, administering projects, publishing his or her work in high quality peer-reviewed journals, and developing materials or intervention models that are used widely. A successful candidate would be one who has exhibited evidence of high-quality technical expertise in his or her field of work and is noted for the creativity and originality of his or her contributions. The Senior Prevention Epidemiologist should be someone who has achieved national or international recognition for his or her work.

They will be responsible for co-leading ongoing funded research; plan and submit original research proposals as a PI; and be available to support others' proposals as a Co-Investigator or Statistician. They will work to establish their own laboratory and research team. Responsibilities will include management of an independent research laboratory; recruiting, instructing, and training staff as needed to perform their responsibilities; and leading all aspects of data collection, analysis, and dissemination of study results. Additionally, they will be expected to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations, focus on advancing drug abuse prevention, and develop innovative within-subject research methodologies. This position is expected to plan, develop and implement original experimental procedures in a research laboratory. They will be responsible for interpreting previous experiments in order to develop an original procedure or technique applicable to the project objective, conducting all aspects of the experiment, making deductions from data, and preparing and presenting detailed findings on research results. The successful applicant will provide overall supervision and management of project meetings and will be responsible for supervising trainees and students. May perform administrative work in directing programs and projects in multiple locations.

Individuals will be asked to develop processes to ensure research studies are conducted efficiently and with the highest levels of research integrity. This position will oversee regulatory processes (e.g., IRB applications, ClinicalTrials.gov), perform data analyses, and be involved in manuscript writing and grant submissions. The program of research conducted as part of the Psychiatry department is rooted in team science, and will involve partnerships within and outside the UNC Department of Psychiatry and with researchers at other academic institutions. We are seeking candidates who demonstrate excellent collaboration and communication skills.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • The applicant must hold a Ph.D. in epidemiology, psychology, statistics, or a related field from an accredited school.
  • Experience related to epidemiology, etiology, and prevention of substance use in children and adolescents required.
  • Advanced expertise in statistical and other research methodologies used in mental health research is required as is demonstrated expertise in these areas in terms of funded projects and research publications.
  • Demonstrated experience in written communication, public speaking and presentation, and application of expertise to advance treatment or prevention is required.
  • Experience with planning, organizing, executing, managing, and/or monitoring the implementation of new and existing research initiatives.
  • Experience with grant planning and submissions, budget planning and management, development of study procedures, adverse event reporting, and/or manuscript writing.
  • Demonstrated experience using analytic/problem-solving skills.
  • Proven success in obtaining federal funding to support major initiatives or research, previous program leadership and management experience, established track record of collaborating and connecting with internal and external partners, experience in real-world and applied research, or clear translational potential to real-world settings.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Preference will be given to candidates with existing funding.
