Build the Future

Do you enjoy testing the limits of possibility? At McGraw Hill, our Software Engineers drive progress and help build the future of learning. If you're passionate about helping engineers reach their next level, structuring delivery without micromanaging, and creating clarity amid complexity, we'd love to hear from you.

We're looking for a Sr. Manager of Software Engineering at McGraw Hill who thrives on growing people, organizing teams for consistent delivery, and partnering across disciplines to ship high-impact products. This role is critical to the success of a maturing product line and a growing team, with a strong focus on execution, feedback, and talent development.

This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.

How can you make an Impact?

You'll operate as a steadying force and connector in our Open Learning program - supporting team health, developing future leaders, and driving progress on a high-visibility product roadmap. You'll be hands-on with delivery, coaching, planning, and cross-functional partnerships while creating an environment where engineers thrive.

  • Drive delivery: Bring clarity and structure to delivery plans. Ensure teams are organized and iterating toward outcomes.
  • Coach and develop: Support career growth and mentorship for engineers, with a near-term goal of promoting leads, managers, and principals from within.
  • Own engineering roadmaps: Translate strategic objectives into technical plans. Prioritize and drive alignment around key initiatives, including tech debt remediation and long-term architectural goals.
  • Challenge directly while caring deeply: Foster a feedback-rich culture by pairing honest, constructive conversations with genuine investment in people's growth, well-being and success.
  • Partner cross-functionally: Act as a catalyst across Engineering, Product, UX, and SRE. Help bridge gaps, drive alignment, and make tradeoffs visible.
  • Lead with context: Represent the team in exec meetings, tell the story behind the work, and help guide prioritization and change.
  • Support team culture: Reinforce our mission-driven, people-first culture while fostering a high-talent, high-accountability environment that delivers real impact.

What can you bring to the role?

  • You have 5+ years of experience directly managing an organization of 10-20 distributed engineers, including senior ICs and early-career talent. You structure your teams for success, set clear expectations, and drive performance through proactive ownership of team outcomes.
  • You bring deep experience guiding teams in building enterprise-scale UIs with Angular, including standing up and scaling design systems that drive consistency, accessibility, and delivery efficiency.
  • You excel at partnering with designers and product teams to translate UX/UI standards into reusable components, ensuring consistency across the product.
  • You turn ambiguity into action - quickly identifying what matters, aligning stakeholders, and driving progress without waiting for perfect conditions.
  • You've led internationally-distributed engineering teams - building trust, alignment, and cohesion across time zones, cultures, and communication styles.
  • You know how to balance delivery with empathy - you challenge directly but care personally.
  • You enjoy partnering closely with Product, SRE, and Design - and can confidently contribute perspective, ask the right questions, and build alignment to achieve the best outcomes.
  • You are motivated by growing people, not just shipping features.
  • You break down long-term goals into clear, actionable plans that drive consistent, measurable outcomes.
  • You prioritize system stability, ensuring issues are identified and resolved before they impact customers.

The technologies you'll work with and guide the team in include:

  • Back-end: Go (most common), Java, Node.js, PHP
  • Front-end: TypeScript, Angular, RxJS, NgRx, and Playwright
  • Relational (MySQL and PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (DynamoDB) databases
  • CI/CD and Infrastructure: GitHub (for version control & Actions), Docker, Kubernetes, New Relic
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS): EKS, ECS, RDS, Lambda, and many other services
  • Collaboration: JIRA, Confluence, Zoom, Slack, and Office 365

Why McGraw Hill?
