Job Summary:

The Global Controller is a key leadership position within TechnoServe and will oversee global corporate accounting and Regional Financial Teams. Reporting to the CFO, the Global Controller is responsible for ensuring that TechnoServe is compliant with donor grants and reporting requirements as well as compliance with US laws, regulations and filing requirements. The Global Controller leads the development and implementation of all company financial management systems, policies, processes and activities to ensure strong resource stewardship, operational efficiency, consistent financial performance, risk mitigation, and exceptional financial management across all financial operations. S/he oversees General Ledger accounting policies and procedures including internal controls, is responsible for the annual audit, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll and monthly financial reporting.

Primary Functions & Responsibilities:

Finance and Accounting



  • Work with HQ accounting staff and country controllers to ensure:

    • accurate and timely monthly financial closing
    • monthly financial statements and interim reports are accurate, complete and timely
    • compliance with TechnoServe's financial accounting manual, financial procurement policies and procedures


  • Work with Country Directors, Country Controllers and accounting staff to address issues raised during internal audit reviews
  • Conduct labor and benefit allocation analysis
  • Prepare monthly consolidated financial statements, which include Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities, and Statement of Cash Flows
  • Management of intercompany accounts
  • Ensure no control deficiencies, significant deficiencies, or material weaknesses are noted during our annual audit, as defined by Statement of Auditing Standards 112
  • Provide transactional system support to include evaluation and fixing of system errors
  • Administer accounting system's security
  • Administer accounting system's data validation rules and data entry speed keys
  • Provide support to Human Resources for management of international pension plans


Leadership and Staff Development:



  • Demonstrate leadership and deliver measurable results by effectively managing team members and support of country financial operations
  • Establish effective and collaborative relationships and partnerships with all levels of TechnoServe's leadership that will facilitate the execution of necessary financial and internal controls
  • In coordination with HQ Human Resources, ensure the training of overseas finance and program management staff and relevant HQ staff, ensuring that the training framework is fully supportive of the competency requirements of relevant Finance and Program managers, and support accomplishment of TechnoServe's strategy


Supervisory Responsibilities:



  • Structure and lead an HQ Accounting Department to align with the functional areas of Accounts Payable, Payroll, Accounts Receivable, Grants Management, Cash Management, General Ledger Management, Systems and Training
  • Provide leadership to the financial management staff overseas through a dotted line reporting of the Country Controllers to the Chief Financial Officer
  • Integrate the work of the Regional Finance Team with the HQ finance staff to ensure collaborative results of the highest quality
  • Develop financial management priorities and objectives
  • Recruit, train, and manage a diverse and talented staff to deliver exceptional service to the organization
  • Develop, manage, and evaluate staff performance plans consistent with TechnoServe's objectives of accountability and learning
  • Ensure the active participation of Finance staff on organization-wide task forces and other initiatives
  • Ensure consistently high levels of interaction and teamwork between HQ and overseas finance teams, and with other departments throughout the organization


Performs other related duties as required

Basic Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or similar, plus at least 15 years of relevant experience. Or a Master's degree plus 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Significant experience in an international, grant-funded nonprofit organization
  • Experience supervising senior-level finance staff (preference for experience managing a remote team)
  • Certified Public Accountant License
  • Experience with fund accounting at the transactional level


Required Languages: English. Fluency in Spanish or French a significant plus.

Travel: Travel up to 20 %

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Expert Excel user (pivot tables, filters, basic VBA macros).
  • Expert Big Query user and google suite products.
  • Demonstrated experience with financial reporting systems and/or business intelligence platforms.
  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills.


Supervisory Responsibilities: Regional Controller, LAC; Regional Controller, Africa and India; US Accounting Team.

Note: Applicants must be eligible for employment in the US at the time of application. This is a hybrid position, and candidates must be able to work from our Arlington, Virginia, Headquarters as determined by your supervisor.
