Job Summary

Are you passionate about outdoor spaces and take pride in leading a team to create clean, safe, and beautiful grounds? We are looking for a dedicated Groundskeeper Supervisor to lead and inspire our groundskeeping crew in maintaining and enhancing our campus landscapes, athletic fields, and public outdoor areas.

In this hands-on leadership role, you'll oversee daily operations, train and mentor staff, and ensure the proper care of our outdoor spaces through tasks such as mowing, planting, trimming, and general maintenance. You'll also manage schedules, equipment usage, and supply inventory-all while upholding safety and environmental standards.

This position plays a vital role in special campus projects such as improving flower beds, enhancing public gathering areas, and contributing to sustainability efforts that support the long-term care and beauty of our grounds. Essential Functions

40% Supervise, manage, and train groundskeeping staff, including hiring, discipline, and evaluations; oversee daily maintenance activities and quality control.

20% Inspect and coordinate repairs for grounds defects; manage special event setup; oversee landscaping tasks (planting, trimming, irrigation); and operate lawn care equipment.

20% Purchase materials, maintain inventory, and administer budget and expenditures; respond to customer complaints and escalated issues; track maintenance schedules.

10% Ensure compliance with safety procedures; maintain safety documentation and supervise chemical use; maintain tools and equipment safely; perform general grounds cleaning.

10% Prepare facilities for athletic events and assist with concrete/block work as needed; manage Work Orders

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED, four (4) years of groundskeeping experience, or relevant work experience, which includes two (2) years of supervisory or lead experience.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job, such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

There is no substitution or equivalency allowable for the High School Diploma or GED.

Desired Qualifications

  • Two (2) or more years of experience in operating budget oversight.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in general park maintenance practices.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in irrigation systems.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in the athletic field & turf maintenance.
  • Four (4) or more years of experience in procurement & contract management.
  • Four (4) or more years of experience in Capital Improvement Projects.
  • Two (2) or more years using digital work order systems or facilities management software.



Special Working Conditions

MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visa.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
State license/certification for the application of pesticides/herbicides may be required to be obtained within one (1) year of employment for some assignments.

Required licenses and certifications must be maintained for the duration of employment within the classification. Licenses and certifications may be subject to renewal and/or require Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or training by the State or issuing authority.

Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed in an outdoor environment with frequent exposure to various weather conditions for short or long durations, including rain, wind, dust, cold temperatures, and extreme desert heat. Work may include moderate exposure to fumes, odors, pollen, insects, rodents, chemicals used in pest control and/or weed abatement, gasses, blood, or other body fluids. Work involves frequently using machinery, equipment, hand tools, and power tools commonly used to maintain outdoor areas. Work may require the use of ladders. Some work may be performed in an office setting and requires using a computer and keyboard for training, checking emails, and/or communicating with coworkers and supervision. This classification requires that an incumbent be on their feet, standing, or walking while performing duties for the majority, if not all, of a work shift. May be exposed to loud noises, including construction or traffic noise, for short of long durations.

Travel and Work Schedule: Travel to various locations at an assigned college or within the District is required. Schedules may consist of shift work, including nights, weekends, holidays, or otherwise non-standard work schedules.

Other Requirements: Depending on the assignment and work task, the position may be required to utilize or wear safety equipment or personal protective equipment (PPE) as determined by MCCCD safety policies, procedures, and/or practices to perform essential functions of the position.

Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D driver's license is required; must meet minimum standards regarding driving.
