Georgia Tech Commercialization is a cornerstone in transitioning the Institute's leading-edge research into real-world applications. It has four pivotal units: CREATE-X, Venture Lab, Quadrant-i, and Technology Licensing. All four programs directly support the Georgia Tech Extension Service Mission. This mission includes, but is not limited to, technology-based economic development, technology commercialization and deployment, entrepreneurship, start-up company incubation, and business/industry outreach. Georgia Tech faculty and support staff assigned to the Extension Service Mission also provide educational programs for businesses and industries to support these missions by facilitating and fostering increased industrial engagement and sponsorship of applied research activities at Georgia Tech.
Job Purpose: Commercialization Catalysts directly support Georgia Tech's extension, service, and economic development missions to the State of Georgia and beyond. This position primarily provides commercialization consultative services for Georgia Tech faculty, students, and other Institute partners/stakeholders/constituents. This role contributes to the Georgia Tech Commercialization mission by applying expertise in technology transfer (lab-to-market strategy). This includes, but is not limited to, the protection of intellectual property, evaluation of invention disclosures, and execution of technology licensing. Georgia Tech Senior Level Commercialization Catalysts are expected to lead multiple complex projects and report measurable outcomes through internal metric reporting systems. This role will research technologies with high commercialization potential and identify faculty, students, or industry partners capable of developing a technology-transferable idea/project.
Major Responsibilities: -Lead multiple portfolios and complex-level initiatives that support Georgia Tech's commercialization mission. Cultivate long-term close partnerships with Georgia Tech faculty, students, and other Institute partners/stakeholders/constituents. -Manage a portfolio of technologies, including technical, market, and IP evaluation. -Evaluate industry needs by building an extensive network of industry contacts. Consult with Georgia Tech researchers to identify complex technology development trends to meet the industry's current and future needs. -Serve as Georgia Tech subject matter expert in Intellectual Property (IP) management, negotiation, and documentation. -Edit and finalize license agreements and negotiate the terms and details of complex license agreements. Serve as lead partnership development representative with appropriate Georgia Tech specialty area personnel (GT Office of Legal Affairs, GT Office of Sponsored Programs, etc.). -Lead diverse community outreach efforts that raise local, regional, national, and international awareness of Georgia Tech's commercialization mission, goals, and partnerships. -Develop and implement technology transfer operational procedures that can improve workflow or process improvement. -Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Required Education: BS degree in Engineering, Business, Technology, Science, Law, or other related fields. Preferred Education: BS degree in Engineering, Business, Technology, Science, Law, or other related fields in combination with an advanced degree (MS/MBA or doctorate) in a business, legal, or technology-related field. Required Work Experience: 6-8 years of job-related work experience, preferably in business development, the legal profession, or other technology commercialization-related fields. Preferred Work Experience: 10+ years of relevant work experience, preferably in business development, the legal profession, or other technology commercialization-related fields. Preferred Certifications: Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP) or Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) Preferred Skills/Background: (1) Advanced-level experience with technology transfer project management, technology licensing, patenting, copywriting, or other forms of intellectual property protection; (2) Senior-level knowledge and experience in commercialization; (3) Advanced experience managing and licensing software disclosures; (4) Advanced ability to analyze, evaluate, and assess complex information; subject matter expert coaching and consulting experience; and an advanced ability to use independent judgment and communicate effectively; (5) Advanced-level public speaking/presentation skills, process analysis, problem-solving, and the use of standard office equipment and specialized computer applications; (6) Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate a substantial and long-term track record in strategic technology transfer success with an ability to interpret/present data in a logical and client-understandable manner.
