Chicago Transit Authority is the second largest transit system in the country! Our college internship program offers summer and year-long internships that provide students with valuable work experience, professional development, and mentorship. Students receive exposure to the discipline of the workplace and are guided by subject matter experts who assist them in acquiring the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to perform in today's technically demanding careers.

Interns at CTA work in a range of departments including:

  • Finance and Purchasing
  • Infrastructure
  • Law
  • Legislative Affairs and Government and Community Relations
  • Safety and Security
  • Technology
  • Transit Operations


Our internships are project-based; therefore, the skills that we seek vary based on the needs of the projects during each term. All majors are welcome to apply, but please see education experience/requirements for specifics about what disciplines each internship project is seeking.

Internships are part-time (15 hours a week) during the school year and full-time (40 hours a week) during the summer.

In this role within the Safety & Security Training Program unit, interns will:

In this role within the Facilities Maintenance Engineering unit, interns will:



  • Assist the FME Mechanical Engineer with Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing projects involving hoist systems, crane systems, fuel systems, bus and railcar washing systems, pumping systems, compressor systems, building automation systems, HVAC systems, water, gas, sewer, air, chemical piping systems, PLCs, electrical systems, ETC.
  • Oversee the Engineering Operations and Maintenance Manual and Drawing Library and producing necessary AutoCad drawings and sketches.
  • Research bus and rail car hoist systems developing presentations for management.
  • Track critical pumping and HVAC systems and determine ways to mitigate issues.
  • Assist in the development of Temporary Heat/Cool spreadsheets used to react to downed HVAC equipment.
  • Collect escalator/elevator documentation, as well as check the reporting website and troubleshoot issues.
  • Organize Engineering Drawings as well as develop Facilities At-A-Glance documents for CTA Facilities.


Qualifications

Educational Experience/Requirements:

Preferred Major(s): Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Plumbing Engineering

Preferred Level of Education: Sophomore or above

Physical Requirements:

The demands associated with the normal office environment

Light physical activity, including walking outdoors and climbing stairs

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Completed Course in AutoCAD HVAC , Heat Transfer Thermodynamics Fluid Dynamics, or Basic Electrical Engineering

Strong Microsoft Office and computer skills

Experience in using Sharepoint

Good oral and written communication skills

Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail

Good project management skills



Additional Details Final salary will be determined in part by the qualifications of the selected candidate and may be higher or lower than target.
