We are seeking a Senior Biological Software Engineer to play a leading role in APL's future in biological defense and health security. Building upon a rich legacy in biosurveillance, biodefense, and public health, we seek to hire an innovator who will bring together software engineers, data scientists, and biologists to develop new capabilities from research initiatives. APL works across USG sponsors to apply the full spectrum of science and engineering to improve the nation's ability to mitigate biological threats to national security and health.

As Senior Biological Software Engineer...

  • Your primary responsibility will be to implement and operationalize groundbreaking advances in national and global security against threats posed by infectious disease and emerging biotechnologies.
  • You will build and lead strong teams to develop and deliver effective solutions to civilian and military sponsors in our National Health and Homeland Protection mission areas.
  • You will champion opportunities to bring together software engineering, data science, and biology, building partnerships across APL, the other divisions of JHU, and the wider research community.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...



  • Have a Masters in computer science or other relevant engineering fields and at least eight years of professional experience in software development.
  • Have a strong desire to tackle challenges in health security and emerging biological threats.
  • Have extensive project management experience from concept development through execution and close out.
  • Excel in team building, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary teams prioritizing diverse perspectives and mentorship.
  • Demonstrate excellence in the following technical areas applied to emerging biological threats:



  1. Leading development of software projects that incorporate or implement Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) capabilities
  2. Proficiency with a variety of programming languages such as JavaScript, Java, and Python
  3. Building software that targets a diverse set of end-users with varying levels of experience



  • Have excellent communications skills, including the ability to convey complex technical ideas to diverse audiences and experience in briefing sponsors and executive leadership.
  • Are willing and able to travel to sponsor and partner sites.
  • Are able to obtain a Top Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.


You 'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...



  • Have experience in biomedical, infectious disease, health security, and/or biodefense domains.
  • Have at least ten years leadership experience in software engineering projects.
  • Have prior experience with large government research and development programs across multiple government agencies.
  • Have operational public or global health experience, successfully implementing R&D solutions in diverse settings and user contexts.
  • Are familiar with government research priorities in emerging infectious disease, public/global health, biodefense, and biotechnology initiatives.
  • Have experience in the operational fielding of capabilities, including deployment into government software infrastructures or austere environments.
