Gallery/Studio Program Teaching Artist (P/T, Temporary)-Education

The Brooklyn Museum seeks a Teaching Artist to teach our fall 2022 Vitality Arts course in the Gallery/Studio Program. Vitality Arts seeks to provide adults ages 55 and older with opportunities for creativity and learning new art forms while building community with peers. The Teaching Artist will lead a course based on the works of Nellie Mae Rowe and explore how a self-taught artist established a practice later in life. Candidates from backgrounds underrepresented in the field of museum education are especially encouraged to apply.

Requirements:

• At least five years of teaching experience with at least one year of teaching in a museum or community setting
• Knowledge of twentieth-century American art history, including folk art and art of the African diaspora
• Reflective educator with a strong painting practice and comfortable working in a range of two- and three-dimensional art-making techniques and methods
• Excellent gallery and studio teaching, communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
• A demonstrable commitment to the Museum's vision of art as a catalyst for a connected, civic, and empathetic world
• A strong desire to work with older adults
• Applications from individuals who identify as people of color, are multilingual, have immigration or first-generation experience, are older adults, and/or are individuals with disabilities are encouraged

Responsibilities:

• Develop written lesson plans and teach gallery/studio art courses in a ten-class semester
• Attend one planning and one wrap-up meeting per semester
• Communicate regularly with the Associate Manager of Art-Making Initiatives throughout the semester about students, supplies, and any other matters of interest
• Facilitate evaluation during the final class
• Attend additional meetings with supervisor or other stakeholders to track progress on the broader creative-aging project

Salary: $60 per hour for teaching; $40 per hour for planning

FLSA status: Non-exempt

Schedule: 3 hours of teaching per week, Tuesdays, 10 am to 1 pm; 6 hours of research and planning spread throughout the semester; the fall semester runs from October 4 through December 15 (no class November 29)
