This position is responsible for completing life claims related accounting work, associated reconciliations to ensure data integrity and accounting accuracy, assistance with the monthly claims closing process and support for claims reporting responsibilities. The candidate must perform these duties on a timely, consistent and accurate basis.
In this capacity, the candidate must provide quality, hands-on attention to the accuracy of underlying systems, general ledger balances/entries, corporate objectives, meeting closing deadlines and the resolution of all outstanding issues and balancing issues, obtaining closure in a timely manner.
The position is expected to complete assigned accounting work on an accurate, timely and quality basis using available tools such as Excel, Word, and other claims and reinsurance administrative systems, as well as developing in-depth knowledge of applicable systems and the Company's general ledger.
Direct Responsibilities
    • Completing the monthly claims process.
    • Perform assigned monthly closing duties to meet corporate deadlines
    • Complete and assist with monthly claims reporting needs
    • Complete associated reconciliations
    • Assist with the resolution of outstanding claims related issues
    • Work with associated areas to explain variances and resolve issues in a timely manner
    • Assist with various assigned year end duties including Financial Reporting schedules.
    • Various general ledger reconciliations
    • Other assigned work duties
Knowledge/Experience/Education
    • This position requires a general working knowledge of GAAP accounting with some exposure to statutory reporting.
    • The candidate must be able to understand the workings and detail of underlying administrative systems, be familiar with database logic and have practical general ledger experience.
    • The position must have a heightened sense of urgency and is expected to be at a level beyond just reporting and/or balancing numbers and data.
    • The candidate must have the ability to identify, understand and make accurate evaluations and/or corrections for unusual fluctuations, variances and/or errors. While understanding the larger picture is important, being detail-oriented is extremely critical for this position to succeed.
    • Bachelor's degree in accounting is required, with a CPA designation or equivalent experience preferred. A minimum of two years of applicable experience, preferably in the insurance environment, is required. Some exposure to financial reporting is a plus.
Abilities
    • This position requires strong analytical and technical abilities, with solid accounting experience.
    • The candidate must be highly detailed and organized.
    • The candidate will be expected to give critical technical and accounting support to the reinsurance and claims accounting department, responsible for ensuring accurate systems and accounting is in place, operating on an accurate and efficient basis.
    • Excellent communication skills are also needed for the close interaction problem resolution with internal staff members and outside departments.
    • The candidate must perform assigned functions under general supervisory direction, keeping manager informed verbally and in writing of activities and problems within assigned area of responsibility and referring matters beyond limits of authority and expertise to manager for direction.
    • The position requires the ability to work additional hours if needed at month, quarter, and year ends.
