Job Details:

Job Purpose

Incumbent will work on a project using surgical skills and some combination of behavioral testing, electrophysiology, immunology and optical (TEM or confocal) imaging techniques to study the structure and function of intact, severed, and repaired spinal cords and peripheral nerves in the laboratory of George D Bittner, Professor of Neuroscience, Department of Neuroscience at The University of Texas at Austin.

Responsibilities
  • Perform peripheral (transection) and spinal cord surgeries (transection and/or rod drop) using PEG-fusion repair protocols.

  • Behaviorally, electrophysiologically, TEM and/or immunohistologically assess control and experimental animals and direct such testing by other employees.

  • Design with PI experimental approaches for repairing traumatic lesions to spinal cords and peripheral nerves.

  • Help direct and train graduate and undergraduate assistants (0-10%)

  • With PI, design and help write grant proposals.

  • Maintain publishing record in top tier journals.

  • Present work at leading conferences in the field.

Required Qualifications
  • PhD in Neuroscience or related field received within the last three years.

  • Experience in peripheral and/or spinal cord surgery of rats, and behavioral testing of such injuries.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)

  • Experience in Immunological and/or histological assay protocols

  • Professional demeanor and good interpersonal skills.

  • Some knowledge of/experience in electrophysiology, immunology and/or optical imaging

Salary Range

$60,000 + depending on qualifications

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
