About this Position:

A Materials Engineer supports and maintains prescribed manufacturing performance targets by performing basic to moderately complex forensic analysis of materials-related problems identified within the process of, but not limited to, material forming, casting, machining, painting, bonding, welding, or assembly. This person will support investigations into areas where process or quality outputs do not meet those performance targets in order to resolve the issues.

Responsibilities include:



  • Perform analysis of failed mass production components or assemblies; subject components and vehicles to test conditions in effort to identify failures and simulate possible causes/influences
  • Create testing plan for a given issue and perform needed testing utilizing laboratory analysis equipment
  • Communicate investigations or studies by way of technical writing/documentation/reporting, present summaries to quality management
  • Work with responsible departments/personnel to facilitate appropriate problem containment



Who we are seeking:

Required Experience:

1-3 years' of metallurgical and/or polymer testing and analysis

Required Education:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering in related engineering field (Materials Science/Eng, Metallurgical Engineering, etc.) or Mechanical Engineering with metallurgical and/or polymer analysis experience

Other job specific skills:



  • Basic knowledge of materials science concepts
  • Perform analysis of ferrous and non-ferrous metals (microstructure analysis, mechanical/chemical properties testing, failure analysis)
  • Proper use of and maintenance of lab equipment (incl. Precision Saw, Mounting Press/Polisher, SEM/EDS, Digital Microscope, Hardness Tester, Tensile Tester, FTIR, TGA, Corrosion/Thermal Chambers, etc.)
  • Perform failure analysis and root cause analysis of related materials issues (metallurgy, polymer, and/or fluid analyses)
  • Ability to technically investigate, derive conclusions from observations/data and analytically approach problem cause phenomena



Additional Position Factors:



  • Workstyle: Onsite/analysis lab
  • Approx. Travel: Travel to other Honda manufacturing facilities in North America is expected to occur on occasion throughout a given year <10% (problem investigation-specific purposes); sample analysis outsource activity
  • Expected 2-4 hours overtime per week as needed
  • Hands-on lab environment work is expected; analysis lab 75% or more in a typical day
