Overview

Minitex is a publicly supported network of academic, public, school and special libraries in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota that work cooperatively to enhance the libraries' services to their patron communities. Minitex's suite of services promote effective delivery of needed information, partnerships, and sharing library resources including collections and electronic resources, bibliographic records, and reference services. Minitex pursues technological innovations to provide new opportunities for delivery of services.

Summary

This position is part of the Digital Initiatives and Metadata Education unit. In this capacity they are responsible for developing and delivering in-person and online instruction and for organizing communications for library professionals in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota on the topics of cataloging and metadata standards and emerging practices. The Librarian both leads and supports libraries in working toward improved workflow in order to enhance services to their users. The position also supports and advances the activities of the Minnesota Digital Library, a program of Minitex, and manages the Minitex Contract Cataloging Program.

Essential Functions

Continuing Education:
Design and deliver continuing education opportunities on cataloging and metadata, for library and other cultural heritage professionals throughout the Minitex region (MN, ND, SD) and nationally. (55%)

  • Present at regional library annual conferences and cultural heritage annual meetings in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota on topics such as cataloging & metadata trends and developments.
  • Develop and deliver in-person and online courses to expand the Minitex cataloging and metadata education program.
  • Maintain and develop knowledge of current practice and future directions in cataloging, metadata, and emerging standards and practices in order to plan strategically for relevant instruction and support.
  • Assess audience needs to develop and maintain relevant, high-quality training and instruction.

Digital Initiatives:
Responsible for advancing the activities of the Minnesota Digital Library (MDL) and other programs of Minitex. (15%)

  • Collaborate across units to provide consultation and expert service on cataloging and related topics.
  • Coordinate with Minnesota Digital Library staff and contribute content to webinars and educational tutorials.
  • Pursue opportunities for new projects and programs in cooperation with the MDL.

Contract Cataloging:
Manage and oversee the activities of the Minitex Contract Cataloging Program. (15%)

  • Assign catalogers to incoming projects and oversee produced work as needed.
  • Hire and train catalogers as needed.
  • Ensure projects are completed in a timely manner, and process the billing and documentation.
  • Encourage and solicit new projects from Minitex institutions.

Communications:
Educate and inform library professionals on issues related to cataloging and metadata and other Minitex services and resources. (15%)

  • Write original educational articles for the Minitex Messenger (published weekly) and distributed to over 300 libraries in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota about trends and developments in cataloging and metadata.
  • Attend and actively participate in Digital Initiatives & Metadata Education unit meetings and other Minitex committee meetings.
  • Attend and actively participate in regional and national conferences and meetings to stay abreast of current trends and changes in the cataloging and metadata environment, and best practices for metadata creation and standards used in libraries, archives, and museums.
  • Review current print and electronic literature and electronic lists, groups, blogs, and social media to maintain current knowledge of issues and trends affecting library professionals working in systems, technical services, and digital collections.
  • Be knowledgeable about, and able to speak to, a range of library issues in order to support, consult with and provide leadership to participating libraries.

Work Location and Travel:
Position operates in a hybrid work environment, with some amount of time required on site each week. Occasional travel is also required within Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota, as well as to national conferences.

Salary and Benefits:
The salary minimum for this position is $58,500 and has an onsite work location designation, with the opportunity for remote work. This is a full-time, 12 month annual renewable, academic/professional position. Position available immediately. Review of applications will begin January 24, 2023.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master's degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3 years experience with original and copy cataloging using RDA, MARC, Library of Congress and/or Dewey Decimal classification.
  • Experience with creating non-MARC metadata using established standards for digital collections (Dublin Core, etc)
  • 3-5 years of teaching, training, or instruction experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of current library principles and practices for cataloging and metadata, acquisitions, and serials.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Professional library experience in an academic or public library environment.
  • Experience working with Open Refine, MARCEdit, and scripting tools for processing records.
  • Familiarity with the Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO) and authority control.
  • Experience using CONTENTdm or a comparable digital asset management system.
  • Awareness of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice initiatives in the cataloging and metadata community.
  • Familiarity with linked data developments in libraries.
