About the Role:

The Network and Unified Communications Manager is highly experienced and serves as a technical lead and direct supervisor to other network and unified communications engineers in the team. They are responsible for the design, implementation of the network and unified communications infrastructure to support the Headquarters and Janelia Research Campus, partnering with the Sr. Manager for all procedures related to identification, prioritization, and resolution of incidents, including the monitoring, tracking and coordination of Network and Unified Communications Team functions. An important additional responsibility includes collaborating with key customers to develop a cohesive and secure network infrastructure that facilitates efficient and effective interoperability of HHMI HQ and Janelia information interfaces. Strong emphasis on organizing network activities across both campuses, fostering communication, and particularly building relationships with the Janelia research staff.

Our team is divided into three parts which consists of the IT Security Team, the Identity and Access Management Team and the Network and Unified Communications team. These three groups report in to the Sr. Manager, IT Security and Network Engineering and a part of the IT Services Department.

What you'll do:

  • Strategy & Planning - Develop critical initiatives around state-of-art networking and unified communications infrastructure.

  • Operational Management - Assign tasks, tracks projects, resolve trouble tickets and staff member performance management.

  • Acquisition & Deployment - Investigate new technologies and deploy them with minimal disruption to work activities.

  • Network and Unified Communications Infrastructure - Hands on administration of network switches, routers, unified communications servers, and wireless network equipment.

  • Incident Response - Assist security team with security incident response and threat detection

  • Partner with Stakeholders - Partner with key customers to discuss upcoming maintenance, network upgrades and enhancements or network outages. Organize network activities across both campuses, fostering communication, and particularly building relationships with the Janelia research staff.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Network, or IT or equivalent combination of education and related experience.

  • Minimum of seven years of experience working as a network engineer in an enterprise network

  • Two or more years of industry experience in managing a network engineering team

  • Cisco CCNP (or similar vendor certifications) or equivalent experience required

  • Experience supporting labs, in research, university or biotech environments preferred

  • Experience with Arista, Brocade, Aruba Wi-Fi, and Juniper routers preferred

  • Experience in auditing network traffic and equipment for security-related concerns preferred

  • Strong initiative, self-motivation, and capacity for creative problem solving.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills, customer service skills, and time management skills.

  • Solid attention to detail and recordkeeping skills.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

Compensation Range

$135,920.00 (minimum) - $169,900.00 (midpoint) - $220,870.00 (maximum)

Pay Type:

Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
