Overview

The Internal Communications Specialist plays a key role in developing content for various internal audiences and contributing to programs that keep employees informed, inspired and connected to our agency culture. As part of our Communications team, the Internal Communications Specialist is responsible for storytelling in written and digital mediums, engaging with employees across the agency, and helping to ensure employees have the information they need in the time they need it. This is a unique opportunity to help creatively support a wide variety of employee roles including coach operators. The Internal Communications Specialist should possess energy and enthusiasm to try new communication modes, have excellent interpersonal, writing and editing skills, and preferred experience in photo and video editing skills, excel at building cross-functional relationships with stakeholders, and have experience disseminating complex information into meaningful messages for employees.



Essential Duties

    Develops internal content (written and video) including articles, agency and department updates, and leadership communication
  1. Edits internal communication; offers suggestions for improvements and rewrites when necessary.
  2. Partners with other departments and divisions to develop and implement communication strategies and tactics specific to their team needs.
  3. Partners with colleagues to develop and implement processes for tracking and monitoring employee engagement, analyzing data, and developing and evolving communication strategies based on this data.
  4. Plans, organizes and implements employee meetings and events as appropriate.
  5. Takes photographs and/or video at employee meetings and events.
  6. Contributes to developing the agency internal communications plan and portions of division communication plan as assigned and monitoring and reporting on goals and key performance indicators.
  7. Represents Community Transit, as assigned, at internal or public events and meetings of committees, organizations and project task forces as a participating member or in absence of manager.
  8. Assists in development of Agency Communications budget.
  9. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.


Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English, marketing or related field.
  2. Three years of experience in the field, including experience in writing and managing internal communications, or an equivalent combination of education.
  3. Experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Preferred

  1. Experience communicating with deskless employees.
  2. Video production or editing experience.
  3. Social media content creation and management skills.

  1. A variety of writing styles.
  2. Correct grammar, usage and punctuation.
  3. Internal communications principles and practices.

  1. Writing for internal audiences.
  2. Preparing and making presentations to groups of various sizes.
  3. Project management, organization and time management.
  4. Communication and interpersonal relations as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
  5. Use of personal computer and related word processing, spreadsheet and desktop publishing software in a Windows environment (e.g., Word, Excel, etc.)

Physical Requirements

Reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions, carrying, pushing, pulling.

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work. Involves local travel to meetings and events.
