About the Job

Summary of Position:
The Chief Financial Officer in the College of Pharmacy is accountable for the College's fiscal management and serves as a key member of the College's leadership team. The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for financial leadership and oversight including budgeting, grants management, contracts, forecasts and planning support, audit and internal controls, and personnel development. The position is the Dean's liaison between the College and the University's Chief Financial Officer and others in the Office of Budget and Finance and will form a strong partnership with the Dean and the Leadership Team.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee College Finance Management and Support Services

  • Act as the College's Resource Responsibility Center (RRC) leader accountable for all financial activities of the RRC and its component units, including the oversight and approval of financial transactions and the communication and reporting to central University units.
  • Oversee and develop finance management staff and related processes, policies, preparation, and approval of financial activity.
  • Manage grants and sponsored programs.
  • Supervise endowment activities including appropriate use and monitoring.
  • Provide compliance oversight (college, university, state, federal, etc.) and the development of new policies and internal controls.
  • Oversee general resource alignment.
  • Conduct contract reviews with the Dean or designee, and/or General Counsel.
  • Establish relationships and fulfill responsibilities with the University's Chief Financial Officer and others in the Office of Budget and Finance; serve on University-wide committees or work groups.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with the University's other health education colleges and units.

Provide Strategic Leadership and Analytical Support to the Dean / College Leadership Team

  • Facilitate the College's budget and resource allocation process and decision support models delivered on the Twin Cities and Duluth campuses.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of financial information, interpretation, and recommendations (including those related to risks, market and environment fluctuations, and pricing strategies).
  • Utilize tuition, research, practice plan and ISO/ESO revenue forecasts to make recommendations about program growth, staffing levels or financial liability.
  • Provide financial assessments of (projected or developing) strategic initiatives, policy adjustments, program changes, and long-range plans.
  • Develop solution-oriented business plans and financial forecasts for external sales, grants, and internal sales opportunities.
  • Conduct academic program financial modeling that informs resource allocation.
  • Align resource allocation with the College's strategic plan.
  • Perform routine monitoring of the workplace for quality improvement, efficiency, and growth opportunities.
  • Participate in the Administrative and Financial Officers Special Interest Group of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
  • Liaison with financial administrators at schools of pharmacy across the Big 10 Academic Alliance.

Ensure Strong Unit-Level and Individual Financial Practices

  • Deliver proactive education, development, consultation, and service to college faculty, staff, and department heads concerning best practices and business acumen.
  • Maintain financial transparency and accountability across collegiate department and administrative units and individuals.
  • Create business and financial skills development and growth opportunities among unit leaders.
  • Develop unit-level relationships.
  • Ensure communication of and compliance with college and university finance policies and procedures.

Salary: $125,000-$140,000, based on qualifications and experience

Supervision:
Work directly with the College of Pharmacy Finance team to supervise and direct all FTE.

Working Conditions:
The work in this position is performed in a general office setting within the College of Pharmacy, however, there will be some work-from home flexibility.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in accounting, finance, budgeting, or planning
  • Strategic leadership experience in progressively more responsible roles
  • Successful supervisory experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with diverse populations and in a large or complex organization
  • Proven record developing relationships across complex communities
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or other related field
  • Proven record of using forward thinking and solution-oriented strategies for driving financial initiatives
  • Advanced understanding of higher education financial systems
  • Expert knowledge of software with financial reporting capabilities
