Overview

The Coding Specialist concisely abstracts pertinent medical data from the outpatient medical record so that complete statistical data can be complied for reporting purposes. This individual accurately codes all diagnoses and procedures for correct billing and accurate statistical data using ICD-9-CM and CPT nomenclatures. The Coding Specialist monitors and processes unbilled accounts and performs various computer related tasks.

    • None
  • LICENSURES OR CERTIFICATIONS PREFERRED
    • Current or working toward certification by AHIMA. ART or CCS
  • EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
    • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and the various medical specialties
  • EXPERIENCE PREFERRED
    • One year or more medical record related experience
  • Follows departmental policies and procedures.
    • Routinely uses Policy and Procedure Manuals and other reference materials as necessary to ensure proper course of action.
    • Does not allow outside commitments to interfere with the work schedule.
    • Proactively seeks to remedy situations before mistakes are made and or advises supervisor of situations that require follow up.
    • Provides immediate supervisor with accurate statistics by the 2nd working day of the month.
    • Demonstrates caution when releasing patient information to health care workers or others; consults with supervisor(s) in uncertain or unusual situations regarding the release of medical information
  • Achieves departmental established levels of performance.
    • Demonstrates a consistent level of performance and strives to maintain a steady level of productivity.
    • Always makes good use of time; reports free time to supervisor; works on on-going projects.
  • Codes and assigns DRG's for all inpatient records and codes ACC records using standard classification systems accurately and in a timely manner.
    • Accurately codes symptoms, diseases, operations, procedures, and therapies using ICD-9-CM and CPT-4
    • Works closely and tactfully with the physicians concerning code & DRG assignments.
    • Follows the established coding guidelines & policies.
    • Maintains the administrative standard that all available charts are coded within 2-4 days of discharge.
    • Maintains standard of inpatient coding; 18 minutes per chart.
    • Maintains standard of ambulatory care coding; 7 minutes per chart.
    • Maintains standard of coding Emergency Room records ,4 minutes per chart
    • Maintains standard of coding Outpatient tests,2 minutes per record.
    • Codes Windwood charts within 2 days of receipt.
  • Abstracts in/outpatient records accurately and in a timely manner.
    • Accurately abstracts information from the medical record into the 3M system.
    • Follows the established abstracting guidelines & policies.
  • Performs various computer related tasks for 3-M computer system.
    • Reports any problems with 3M Coding and Reimbursement system
