The Camera Hardware group at Apple develops depth-sensing hardware such as the revolutionary TrueDepth camera that powers FaceID, and the breakthrough LiDAR scanner. This multi-disciplinary group of engineers is responsiblefor architecture, research, and manufacturing development of these highly complex sensing systems for Apple products.The Depth Hardware team is seeking a Sr. Level laser-optical and display characterization engineer to support R&D and characterization depth sensors for future products.
Key Qualifications
  • Strong lab experience in designing and characterizing hardware systems such as depth sensors, cameras, or compact imaging optical systems
  • Expertise in ground-up development of custom characterization setups involving optical, laser, mechanical and electrical hardware
  • Expertise with laser optical lab equipment - imaging sensors, lasers, power measurement, metrology tools, electronics hardware, and opto-mechanical hardware.
  • Expertise with display components, design and performance
  • Strong skills using Matlab, Python, C/C++, JMP for automation, data acquisition, and statistical analysis
  • Experience with image processing and quantitative analysis is a plus
  • Experience with 3D CAD mechanical design is a plus
  • Experience with board level circuit build and debug is a plus
  • Experience supporting volume manufacturing and flow (IQC, OQC, DVT to PVT) is a plus
Description
As a Senior Depth Module Characterization engineer, you are going to be responsible for leading module and system intrinsic and extrinsic performance testing, develop new testing methodologies, and report data driven learnings to cross-functional module and system design teams. Lead and execute the development of laboratory hardware test requirements, characterization and validation plans, and deliver quantitative metrics and analyses. Design, build, automate, and qualify characterization tools for laser, optical, and imaging systems. Implement proven high fidelity optical characterization testers within Apple labs and at manufacturing sites. Drive technical interface of performance results between mechanical engineers, optical designers, module and system development leads, and manufacturing teams. Travel to support design/production/supplier teams as necessary (up to 10%)
Education & Experience
MS or PhD degree in Optics, Physics or Electrical Engineering 5+(PhD) or 10+(MS) years of industry experience

  • At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $144,500 and $250,000, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
