Overview

A Senior Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE) plays a key role to Shure's product development teams and in supporting ongoing production. Reporting within the quality division, the primary responsibility of a senior SQE is to provide supplier quality & mechanical engineering services to operations, quality, and product development engineering divisions. In this role the SQE operates within cross-functional teams comprising members from multiple departments to develop new products, evaluate potential suppliers, and monitor existing suppliers to drive performance improvement. Within these product development teams this position represents the supplier quality team at all stages of product development progressing from concept through launch. This position acts as a liaison between suppliers, manufacturing plants, purchasing, and product development. This role is expected to operate with a high level of independence within the team-based environment and requires the ability to execute complex tasks with minimal supervision. The position is hybrid in-person/remote based in Niles, IL with opportunities to travel to suppliers and manufacturing facilities globally.



Responsibilities

    Responsible for qualifying suppliers and purchased components for production including validation of supplier processes and evaluation of required characteristics / specifications according to Shure standards.
  • Ensures that suppliers deliver parts, materials, and services by developing production part approval package requirements, creating, or modifying inspection instructions, coordinating the evaluation and disposition of suspect material, and obtaining documented root cause analysis and supplier corrective/preventative actions for non-conforming material through Shure's SCAR system as appropriate.
  • Represent supplier quality interests by actively participating in product development and commodity teams, including the supplier selection and evaluation process.
  • Participate in product design & drawing reviews acting as the voice of the supplier with mechanical engineering, metrology engineering, and purchasing. Actively participates in Shure's DFM process with suppliers.
  • Evaluate suppliers on an ongoing basis, assessing their overall capability and performance. Provide feedback internally and directly to the suppliers. Assist suppliers and internal teams in resolving performance or supply issues with purchased components.
  • Aid suppliers in the use of quality improvement tools such as root cause and corrective/preventative action the 8D process, control plans, cause and effect diagrams, statistical analysis (including capability studies and SPC), error proofing, and GR&R to drive performance improvement.
  • Act as technical liaison between suppliers and Shure's internal manufacturing, purchasing and product development teams.
  • Participate in the development and communication of the quality division's best practices, methodologies, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Perform system and process audits on site at suppliers (or virtually as necessary) according to Shure supplier quality audit standards.
  • Provide training, guidance, and support to other associates across divisions.
  • Evaluate parts in a hands-on manner, including participation in pre-production product development builds and on-site at suppliers.
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (or Technology).
  • A minimum of 5 years of engineering experience, possessing broad experience and knowledge of supplier quality is desired.
  • Knowledge and experience with various manufacturing processes, including diecasting, machining, stamping, injection molded plastics, rubber molding, and others is desired.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and interpret specifications, including geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Knowledge and experience with different finishing processes (plating, painting, etc.) is a plus.
  • ASQ certification as a Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) and/or Certified Supplier Quality Professional (CSQP) is preferred.
  • Ability to remain current with best practice trends, i.e., supplier partnerships, total quality concepts, ISO 9000, etc.
  • Experience performing audits and monitoring supplier performance is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability working on complex assignments that include independently managing projects involving additional associates from within and outside supplier quality.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with component or product life and reliability testing is desirable.
  • Ability to multi-task and set priorities based on Shure's business needs with guidance from management.
  • Adept at using Windows based applications such as Teams, Word, and Excel. Experience with other collaboration tools such as OneNote, SharePoint 365, etc.
  • Ability work on problems of diverse scope using data analysis and various problem-solving tools.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed (~15% average)
