Janelia Research Campus is a pioneering research center in Ashburn, Virginia, where scientists pursue fundamental questions in neuroscience and imaging. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) launched Janelia in 2006, establishing an intellectually distinctive environment for scientists to do creative, collaborative, hands-on work. Our integrated teams of biologists, computational scientists, and tool-builders pursue a small number of scientific questions with potential for transformative impact. We share our methods, results, and tools with the scientific community. It is a uniquely innovative and collaborative atmosphere that reflects HHMI's reputation for excellence.

Summary:

is a new, ambitious and multipronged platform for integrating Janelia's robust and wide-ranging efforts in developing microscopy instrumentation, probes, image analysis and visualization into a seamless workflow. It is based on the successful model of the , and will provide Janelia scientists and collaborators access to cutting edge Janelia-built pre-commercial microscopes, as well as commercial systems. More importantly, I2 scientists will create highly integrated collaborations to design and implement complex, longer-term microscopy projects. This will augment Janelia's that provides microscope training and support. As the nexus and extension of the AIC and LMSR, I2 will co-innovate with Janelia scientists to (1) provide detailed technical consultations and experimental design, (2) develop novel biological sample preparations and labeling methodologies, (3) implement novel imaging workflows, and (4) offer in-depth image processing and analysis capabilities and guidance.

About the role:

The I2 BioImage Data Analyst will work hands-on with Janelia scientists and their collaborators at all stages of their microscopy experiments and will be a primary source of bioimage analysis expertise. This is an excellent role for a natural problem solver with an empathetic, collaborative approach who enjoys partnering with various Janelia teams to drive comprehensive, integrative development and application of imaging science.

What we provide:

  • A competitive compensation package, with comprehensive health and welfare benefits.

  • Interdependent, team-wide support in daily operations.

  • Access to world-class researchers, resources, and impactful science as part of your career development.

  • Janelia Research Campus is committed to a healthy work-life balance, and offers many amenities, including on-site childcare, free gym, on-campus housing, plentiful social and dining spaces, and shuttle-bus service.

What you'll do:

  • Co-develop with Janelia researchers the central objectives and experimental requirements of their microscopy needs.

  • "Think outside the box" as the norm.

  • Develop detailed experimental plans for effective project management.

  • Stay updated with the latest microscopy-related research & development at Janelia and elsewhere.

  • Use existing image processing and analysis tools to create custom processing workflows to address the image analysis and visualization needs of each project.

  • Interpret images and scientific results to propose subsequent experiments and procedures. This will involve a combination of software analysis tools, in collaboration with the Janelia Scientific Computing team and other data scientists as well as biologists.

What you bring:

  • M.S., or Ph.D. in Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent in education and experience.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both remotely and in-person (written and verbal), conveying expert advice in experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation.

  • Ability to manage progress on multiple projects concurrently and thrive in a highly collaborative research ecosystem.

  • Minimum two years of experience working with microscopy-based bioimages.

  • Experience translating biological hypotheses and questions into quantitative approaches.

  • Experience with common image processing and analysis techniques such as image filtering, segmentation, feature recognition, pattern matching, deconvolution. Familiarity with machine learning approaches will be ideal.

  • Expertise in development of image processing and analysis workflows using FIJI, Python, MATLAB, or other platforms.

  • Basic understanding of how optical imaging devices impact image quality/content and how biological experiments are performed is preferred.

As part of your application, we encourage you to submit a cover letter explaining your interest in working at Janelia and how your unique background could impact our research and support teams. This is as an opportunity to differentiate yourself, and we appreciate a keen eye for detail.
