Imaging Application Scientist

Summary:

is a new, ambitious and multipronged platform for integrating Janelia's robust and wide-ranging efforts in developing microscopy instrumentation, probes, image analysis and visualization into a seamless workflow. It is based on the successful model of the , and will provide Janelia scientists and collaborators access to cutting-edge Janelia-built pre-commercial microscopes, as well as commercial systems. More importantly, I2 scientists will create highly integrated collaborations to design and implement complex, longer-term microscopy projects. This will augment Janelia's that provides microscope training and support. As the nexus and extension of the AIC and LMSR, I2 will co-innovate with Janelia scientists to (1) provide detailed technical consultations and experimental design, (2) develop novel biological sample preparations and labeling methodologies, (3) implement novel imaging workflows, and (4) offer in-depth image processing and analysis capabilities and guidance.

About the role:

The I2 Imaging Application Scientist will work hands-on with Janelia scientists and their collaborators at all stages of their microscopy experiments and will be a primary source of expert imaging applications knowledge and expertise. What you'll do:

• Co-develop with the I2 team and Janelia researchers the central objectives, experimental requirements and identify hurdles solve some of the toughest and ambitious scientific challenges.

• "Think outside of the box" as the norm.

• Develop detailed experimental plans for effective project management.

• Liaise with Janelia technology development groups to introduce emerging imaging technologies, including imaging probes, hardware, and software, into the projects at hand.

• Stay updated with the latest microscopy-related research & development at Janelia and elsewhere.

• Devise application-specific tools and techniques to enable sample preparation, imaging, analysis, and data representation.

• Operate, maintain, configure, and troubleshoot microscopes, as well as perform necessary design/engineering of microscope improvements to drive Janelia science.

• Interpret images and scientific results to propose and perform subsequent experiments and procedures. This will involve a combination of software analysis tools, in collaboration with the Janelia Scientific Computing team and other data scientists as well as biologists.

What you bring:

• Ph.D. in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Optical Engineering, or related field, or equivalent in education and experience.

• Ability to effectively communicate both remotely and in-person (written and verbal), providing expert advice in experimental design, and execution, as well as data analysis and interpretation.

• Ability to manage progress on multiple projects concurrently and to thrive in a highly collaborative research ecosystem.

• Minimum five years of hands-on experience in biological sample preparation (including small animal models) and imaging.

• Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues with sample preparation, imaging system performance, configuration, and usage in order to produce superior imaging results.

• Experience using at least one of the following: light sheet, confocal, 2-photon intravital microscopy, or super-resolution imaging technologies.

• Experience in unique microscopy techniques such as mass spectroscopy imaging, fluorescence lifetime imaging, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, photoacoustic imaging, etc. a plus.

• Experience in image processing and analysis methods.

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
