Job Description Summary

The web developer in the School of Law will maintain and enhance law school web services with a focus on updates necessary to facilitate the Student Information System (SIS) transition from Banner to Workday. Working with stakeholders and subject matter experts, the web developer will be responsible for the design, development, testing, and maintenance of PHP-based websites and web applications. As a member of the law school IT Department, the incumbent will handle website-related support tickets escalated by the IT Help Desk team. Additional responsibilities include the creation of custom reports as well as limited application administration and project management responsibilities.
This position has been approved as a remote position, hybrid and in-person are options as well.

Job Description

Essential Functions:
Web and Database Development

  • Design and implement scalable, reliable, and secure web applications.
  • Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code using PHP, MySQL, Javascript and other web technologies.
  • Develop and maintain MySQL databases to support web applications.
  • Integrate web applications with third-party APIs.
  • Assist with development and validation of custom Workday integrations that will be utilized to ingest Workday data into web applications through RESTful API endpoints.
  • Troubleshoot and debug issues with existing websites and web applications.
  • Troubleshoot and debug issues related to website performance, server configuration, and database connectivity.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation for projects.
  • Collaborate with other developers, stakeholders, and subject matter experts to ensure that projects are completed to specifications and delivered on time.
  • Determine the scope and requirements for web projects through detailed needs assessments.
  • Maintain awareness of current ADA and W3C accessibility guidelines (including Section 504/508).
  • Stay up-to-date with emerging trends and technologies in web development.

Reporting Development

  • Translate law school report requirements into functional custom reports using Workday Report Writer tools.
  • Understand the reporting requirements and work with colleagues to determine how reporting requirements will be met.
  • Perform testing of reports and calculated fields to ensure user needs are accurately met.
  • Use best practices and industry standards in developing Workday custom reports.

Applications and Project Management

  • Performs operational tasks to prepare web applications for each academic semester/ year.
  • Provides tier-two support for Law IT managed web applications.
  • Establish and promote guidelines, best practices, and standards.
  • Serve in a project management capacity on various IT department projects (primarily those related to web projects and reports) to ensure that they are completed to specifications and delivered on time.
  • Provide status of current tasks, planned tasks, deliverable status, and any issues, concerns, or risks. Provide mitigation strategies as needed.

  • May perform additional or other work as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor's Degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven experience as a PHP developer.
  • Experience building products using HTML/CSS/JS and other front-end web technologies, ensuring compatibility across different endpoint environments.
  • Knowledge of web standards, cross-browser compatibility, and accessibility.
  • Experience developing user interfaces and prototypes from wireframes and designs.
  • Familiarity with various web development and debugging tools.
  • Familiarity with Git or other version control systems.
  • Familiarity with Linux and basic proficiency in command line navigation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Relevant certifications are a plus.
  • Experience with WordPress (including multi-site implementations).
  • Prior experience with Workday is preferred but not required. Training is available for Workday Report Writer tools.
  • Prior experience with Banner and Cognos is preferred but not required.
  • Prior experience in higher education is preferred.

Accountabilities:

  • This position will report to the Executive Director of Information Technology in the School of Law and work closely with colleagues in Law IT, University IT, and other departments at the law school and University.
  • Responsible for own work.
  • Must maintain the security and confidentiality of sensitive information and data.
