The position is eligible for remote employment, excluding the following locations: Alaska, Arkansas, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wyoming.

The Instruction & Design Manager (IDM) will be instrumental in supporting employees' learning and development at Macmillan Learning. Leading the facilitation of live trainings as well as the design and development of our learning content, the IDM will spend their time developing pedagogically-rich learning content and coordinating and facilitating live trainings (both virtual and in-person) for learners of all levels and from all departments at Macmillan Learning.

They will partner and collaborate with a wide range of thought leaders from different parts of the organization to help develop and facilitate sessions. They will also work closely with other L & D Managers on overall Learning & Development strategy and specific programming. This exciting opportunity offers the right candidate creativity in designing, building, and maintaining asynchronous learning content including courses, modules, microlearning campaigns, and learning paths to support all Macmillan Learning employees. We are looking for candidates who are passionate about helping people to develop in their careers, love teaching, and are both creative and detail-oriented in finding and using the most effective pedagogical tools and methods to engage and upskill adult learners.

The Instruction and Design Manager is responsible for developing, coordinating, and facilitating live training (both virtual and in-person) and asynchronous learning content design to include courses, modules, and learning paths to support both onboarding and on-going training and upskilling of all Macmillan Learning employees. The I&D Manager collaborates closely with the Director of Training to coordinate training efforts to create and implement new training across the entire organization. The I&D Manager works with the divisions within Macmillan Learning to develop and deliver training on a wide variety of both hard and soft skills, and continues professional development and working with external vendors and thought leaders when necessary. Deep collaboration across many different parts of the organization is required. This position is also responsible for meeting and exceeding financial and unit goals for Macmillan Learning.

Key Responsibilities:

Content Creation:



  • Research content from a variety of sources, evaluating and vetting for currency, accuracy, value, and alignment to the training topic
  • Curation and vetting of ML subscribed training content
  • Building training modules, courses, and curricula in LMS using authoring tools; including audio, visual, video, podcasts, and assessment
  • Evaluating external resources, vendors, and thought leaders
  • Investigating trends and best practices in learning and development, ability to adapt and implement to better our programming
  • Seek out own professional development opportunities to improve and increase our capability as a team and in our programming
  • Collaborate with and assist L&D team in gathering data on best practices, designing, and implementing data-focused training programs
  • Maintain and update current training materials and tools



Facilitating, Delivering, Leading Live Training Sessions and Events:



  • Teach and instruct adults in virtual, in-person, and hybrid environments
  • In presentation and public speaking, demonstrate strong emotional intelligence; ability to read an audience and adjust pace; flexibility to pause for questions or allow for learner distractions without losing focus, etc.
  • Demonstrate proficiency using/navigating in virtual meeting platforms (including Zoom, Google Meet)
  • Write and re-work agendas to meet the needs of trainees as determined by feedback from L&D, employees, managers, and leadership
  • Travel to offices, meeting locations, and campuses; book travel - flights, rental cars, hotel within budgetary constraints of training team
  • When necessary book appropriate (internal and/or external) facilitators well in advance of meetings
  • Logistical organization of booking conference rooms, hotel blocks, and social entertainment (dinners, etc.)



Communication, Collaboration, Project Management:



  • Directly manage all aspects of a training project start to finish, developing outcomes, coordinating collaboration meetings with other members of L&D, keeping session development on pace, organizing logistics for virtual and/or in person sessions and meetings
  • Collaborate with various leadership teams across the organization on the discovery of training needs, consult with team members on exact needs, create/deliver appropriate training to meet needs and via the correct channel
  • Collaborate with various leaders to help to develop and consult on partnered training programs; from consultation to delivery and facilitation
  • Collaborate closely with Director of L&D and L&D managers on implementation of best practices for learning and delivering training for new hires, current employees, and management roles
  • Work with L&D team members to create and implement training materials and live training for 5-10 live training events per year; lead some sessions and assist team to facilitate others
  • Collaborate with Director of L&D and other company leaders to determine alignment of priorities within the job role to higher company goals and initiatives across the organization
  • Communicate issues, opportunities, observations, and market trends to all ML groups
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in writing to large groups to announce training opportunities
  • Work in collaboration with executive leadership, including leaders of full People team (HR, Comms, DEI, L & D) on company and training priorities
  • Work in partnership with select teams to develop and execute team-specific initiatives and programs if/as needed
  • Travel to offices and other work locations to collaborate and contribute to meetings when appropriate



Evaluation & Assessment:



  • Develop rubrics to evaluate the learning and/or behavioral change resulting from a training session, course, or curriculum
  • Develop measurement of the effectiveness of training; impact on the individual and the organization, including 360 degree feedback, interviews, and surveys
  • Analyze data to draw conclusions and prioritize high impact training content and events
  • Present findings to Sr Director, L&D or other executive leadership if/as necessary



Administrative Activities:



  • Manage and track travel & entertainment (T&E) activities and remain within budget
  • Maintain company property including physical office equipment, all company materials, computer equipment and databases




Essential Qualifications:



  • 5+ years' professional work experience in education, sales, or training
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Education, English, Communications



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Curriculum development or instructional design
  • Training and development experience
  • Presentation, facilitation, or teaching experience
  • 3+ years' Publishing Sales, marketing, and/or editorial experience with success selling or promoting or creating digital products



Physical Requirements:

The I&D Manager position requires periods of close concentration; must be able to multitask; must be able to concentrate in noisy/busy environment. Must be able to work more than 40 hours a week, as needed. Must be able to travel up to 25% of the time, including ability to drive for periods from 2 to 5 hours, a valid driver's license is required. Attendance at national and regional meetings is required (5 or more days).

Annual Salary Range: $60,000 - $90,000
