Nature of Work:
This is skilled work at the sub-journey level in a trade such as plumbing or carpentry. Incumbents are responsible for manual labor work in the upkeep and repair of commercial, industrial, and residential buildings, facilities, equipment, and grounds.


Education and Experience:
(The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.)

Three (3) years of experience in the operation of tools and equipment of the type assigned to this class.


Special Qualifications:
Depending upon the division in which an incumbent is assigned, individual may be required to possess and maintain a valid class "O" automobile driver's license or a class "B" commercial driver's license with "N" endorsement and no air brake restriction.


Pay Range:
$20.17 with step increases to $26.53/Hourly

Examination Information:
The examination will consist of a structured interview which will be scheduled at a later date. The structured interview is designed to assess job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. The final eligibility list will be assembled from those candidates achieving a passing score of 60% on the structured interview (100% weight).


Veteran Points:
To claim five (5) points for veteran's preference, you must submit proof of service (such as a DD-214) that includes date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. (You must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty.) To receive an additional five (5) points credit for disability, you must submit proof of eligibility from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs dated within the last 12 months. This information must be submitted to the Human Resources Department by October 13, 2023.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in at least two of the building trades. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in the building trades. Knowledge of the geography of the City of Omaha. Skill in the use and maintenance of assigned tools and equipment. Ability to understand sketches, plans, and area maps. Ability to prepare reports of work completed and materials used. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the general public. Ability to understand oral or written instructions. Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines. Ability to reach, balance, bend, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, stand, walk, push, pull, and lift 50 to 100% of the time and to climb and stoop from 50 to 75% of the time. Ability to use up to one hundred (100) pounds of force occasionally, up to fifty (50) pounds of force frequently, and up to twenty (20) pounds of force constantly to move objects.


Essential Functions:
(Any one position may not perform all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all of the duties that may be performed in positions allocated to this class.)

Performs rough-in and finish carpentry such as hanging or repairing drywall, including walls, ceilings, and building wheelchair ramps, and repairing or replacing floors. Repairs rotted subfloors and joists. Performs finish carpentry, such as installing door trim, baseboards, and quarter rounds. Replaces or repairs stairways, windows, and doors, including screens. Installs stairs, handrails, grab bars, and window and door locks. Installs pre-hung/slab doors, storm doors, and storm windows. Winterizes door trims, windows, and air conditioners. Performs household minor repairs and painting duties, including walls, trim, and ceilings. Performs and assists with minor plumbing, including installing and repairing faucets, toilets, sink baskets, P-traps, and center/end outlets, and water line shutoffs. Installs smoke detectors and motion lights. Inspects the work to be done at project sites and prepares estimates of the material and labor costs involved. Compiles records and prepares reports of completed work and materials used. Installs and repairs wooden and chain link fences. Assembles new playground equipment and inspects, repairs, or replaces broken equipment such as fences, cages, backstops, bleachers, swings, and slides. Performs minor repairs to equipment and tools. Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor. Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.

Conditions of Employment: Candidates must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or proof of permanent residence or authorization to work. The City of Omaha reserves the right to conduct criminal history, driving record, reference and credit checks and a background investigation on applicants for employment. Successfully passing a criminal background review, reference check, and if applicable, a credit check, is required as a condition of employment. If applicable, the City will require that you successfully pass a review of the driver's license, driving abstract, a pre-employment drug test, a hearing test and a back screening examination as a condition of employment.
