About This Role:

The College of Arts and Sciences at Kansas State University seeks nominations and applications for the position of Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies. Arts and Sciences, K-State's largest college, has more than 4500 undergraduate and graduate students, with 45 undergraduate degree programs, 16 doctorate and terminal degree programs, and a range of other masters-only programs, accelerated BS/MS programs, and undergraduate and graduate certificates. The College's 22 departments cover the visual and performing arts, the humanities, and the social, physical, and life sciences. Arts & Sciences' Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) expenditures were $47.9M in FY2022, and College faculty generated over $23M in extramural grant awards in FY2023. Kansas State University is a land-grant, R1 institution with an ambitious new strategic plan to lead as a "next-generation land-grant university": It is situated in the growing community of Manhattan, KS, nestled in the beautiful Flint Hills of northeastern Kansas.

The ADR position has three broad areas of responsibility: 1) developing and implementing strategies for the support and expansion of research and creative activity, both across the College and between the College and other groups both internal and external to K-State; 2) coordinating graduate programs in the college in conjunction with the Graduate School and other leadership in the College; and 3) supporting and developing corporate engagement and engaged scholarship across the College. We are eager to find a successful researcher to fill this position and are open to negotiating an administrative appointment between 75%-100% that will allow a successful candidate to continue pursuing individual research. The ADR is a 12-month administrative position with appointment and tenure in an appropriate academic unit of the College.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Coordination and development of interdisciplinary research teams, grant writing efforts, and faculty research and creative activity across all disciplines represented in the College.
  • Strategic planning for increasing extramural awards.
  • Development and oversight of corporate engagement in the College.
  • Coordination of College efforts in engaged scholarship.
  • Coordination and development of graduate programs, together with other Assoc/Assist Deans and department leadership.
  • Management of student fee funding allocations with department heads and College Fiscal/Budget Officer.
  • Coordination of College undergraduate research funding and programs.
  • Management of risk and compliance in research and community engagement in the College, in coordination with central university risk and compliance offices.
  • Working with the Asst Dean of Facilities and central offices on facilities and administrative support for research and creative activity across the College.
  • Occasional work in, or in support of, development and alumni relations.
  • Liaising with the office of the VPR, the Graduate School, and other offices across the University.
  • Supervision of Grant Specialist.

This is a regular administrative appointment with a five-year review cycle. Effective starting date of this appointment is negotiable. Please direct any questions to Associate Dean Scott Tanona (stanona@ksu.edu), head of the search committee.
