We are actively searching for a Structural Engineer with NAVFAC experience to join our Norfolk, VA office. As the successful new hire, you will have 8 to 15 years of waterfront, industrial and/or building structural experience. You will join a team of engineers working on the planning, engineering analysis and studies, design, and providing A-E construction services for waterfront structures and facilities projects. You will work on major infrastructure programs/projects including the U.S. Navy's Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP) dry dock capacity and optimization projects, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and municipal coastal resiliency projects and commercial port wind energy projects. Our highly-technical projects include: U.S. Navy waterfront facilities, infrastructure and dry docks; large and small marinas; piers, ports and terminals; vessel mooring and berthing structures; bulkheads; and shore protection structures.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead or Assistant Lead Structural/Design and/or Project Management of complex waterfront infrastructure design projects. Responsibilities include proposal development, project set-up, team building, quality management, schedule/progress tracking, responsive client communications, meeting minutes, and coordination of subconsultant efforts and field programs
  • Attend, participate, and/or lead client meetings (both virtual and in-person at commercial, municipal, and Federal/DOD) including development of meeting minutes
  • Lead the development of structural analysis, modeling, capacity calculations and calculation reports
  • Perform structural analysis, design and detailing for waterfront structures consisting of concrete, steel, timber, etc. Projects may consist of:
    • NAVFAC Atlantic and NAVFAC Pacific SIOP projects including dry docks, caissons, and industrial buildings
    • Large marine/cargo terminals
    • Offshore wind ports and pier facilities
    • Vessel mooring and berthing structures
    • Piers, wharves, bulkheads and marinas
    • Breakwaters and shore protection structures
  • Oversee design process and guide team of multidisciplinary engineers
  • Ensure delivery of project study and design deliverables and maintain project schedule
  • Review and approve all deliverables prior to submission to client; review and resolve client's comments as they relate to scope of work and services
  • Provide A-E post construction award services (PCAS) for U.S. Navy construction projects
  • Perform site investigations, construction observation, and provide field consultation
  • Mentor junior engineers
  • Create and maintain client relationships
  • Act as the primary interface between Moffatt & Nichol, NAVFAC Design Managers, clients, and subconsultants
  • Prepare and submit proposals to clients
  • Assist in pursuit planning and development
  • Manage subconsultants

Qualifications:

  • Master's (preferred) or Bachelor's degree (required) in Structural Engineering or in Civil Engineering with Structural emphasis
  • Professional Engineer license in VA or ability to obtain PE in VA through reciprocity within 6 months of hire
  • Possess 8 to 15 years of combined experience in engineering design and project management
  • Experience with NAVFAC design and construction projects a must. Experience may be in waterfront, industrial and/or buildings design and/or construction
  • Working knowledge of UFC (Unified Facilities Criteria) required
  • Experience with understanding and developing detailed construction contract documents
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Eligibility to successfully pass background check to secure Department of Defense DBIDS card and other badges required by clients
  • Willingness and availability to travel overnight both domestically and internationally
  • Due to client parameters, selected candidate must show (post offer) proof of U.S. citizenship and clear results of a thorough background check that may include but is not limited to credit and criminal history
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Physical requirements:

Majority of work is office based. Site visits will be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.
