General Notes

This is an in-person position at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus in North Austin.

Purpose

As part of a multi-disciplinary, integrated research team, the candidate will participate directly in efforts to provide support for maintenance/deployment of seismic stations and seismic data flow.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain and trouble shoot electronics associated with a seismic network including sensors, dataloggers, signal antennas, modems, power systems. Evaluate and verify equipment being considered for use in a seismic network.Maintain and trouble shoot data flow from sensors to archive in a Linux or windows environment.

  • Apply sound engineering judgement to solve problems, plan seismic station deployment and maintenance activities with the need to optimize use of time and resources. Make frequent field visits with team members for deployment and troubleshooting seismic equipment.

  • Provide results and present in our stakeholder groups and conferences.

  • Design and implement novel approaches to ground motion data collection.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with 4 years' experience or master's degree with 2 years' experience in engineering, physics, or related field. Experience using electronic test equipment and ability to debug and solve issues with electronic test equipment. Ability to communicate with vendors and stakeholders to specify seismic equipment requirements, solve problems, plan maintenance or deployment visits. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in groups and independently, sometimes in demanding conditions. Ability to manage complex systems. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to meet deadlines and deliverables. Professional demeanor and excellent interpersonal skills. Adhere diligently to safety protocols. Knowledge of, or desire to learn, signal process standards including instrument responses. Knowledge of electronic test equipment, methods and troubleshooting. Ability to interact positively with colleagues, stakeholders and partners.

Preferred Qualifications

More than the required years of experience, with specific background and hands-on experience with instrumentation. Knowledge of computer science, metrology experience, and patent on design and development of equipment. Knowledge of seismic dataloggers, sensors and response criteria. Knowledge of earthquake location software (e.g. SeisComP, Antelope, Seisan, Earthworm). Willingness and ability to adapt to changing research programs and project needs.

Salary Range

$60,000+ depending on qualifications
