Selection made by committee and hiring supervisor based on review of online applications and results of personal interviews. Some evening, weekend and holiday work required.

Responsibilities
  • Assist lead journeyman plumber to install, modify, and repair facility plumbing and mechanical systems, including portable water, steam, natural gas, chilled water, air and laboratory gases, waste water, and all associated devices, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Support zone maintenance shops and other campus departments in repair of existing plumbing systems, including after-hours response to project needs and campus facility emergencies. Occasionally supports other trade with mechanical-shop related assignments, and other related project activities such as incidental furniture moves, appliance setups, etc.
  • Provide team support in maintenance and operation of shop. Clean, sharpen, and adjust tools. Maintain and properly secure shop, tools, equipment, and vehicles. Maintain a clean an safe work environment in shop and at job site.
  • Cut, thread, and assemble pope systems including iron, copper, stainless, glass, and various plastics.
  • Read, understand, and work from blueprints, specifications, standards, and written or verbal instructions with direct supervision. Inspect completed work for compliance with construction documents, and regulatory building and safety codes.
  • Drive UT vehicle to and from job sites to deliver personnel, equipment, and materials. Drive off-campus to purchase and pickup materials and equipment for projects.
  • Accomplish basic shop paperwork and electronic documents, including for materials used, daily labor report, and weekly timesheets.
  • Support and promote the department core values of Innovation, Integrity, Service, Stewardship and Teamwork in personal performance and performance of team members. Attend management-directed meetings and training. Accomplish other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

High school graduation or GED. Some level of experience in plumbing, pipefitting, or steam-fitting with emphasis on interior renovations. Currently registered as an apprentice-level plumber from Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Registration must be maintained as a condition of continued employment. Commitment to rules regarding customer service, job performance, and job-site safety. Ability to perform in a team work environment and promote teamwork among coworkers. Texas Class "C" driver's license or ability to obtain one 30 days after becoming a Texas resident.

Preferred Qualifications

Associates degree or graduation from vocational or technical training related to plumbing, pipefitting, or facility renovation or construction. At least two years of documented apprentice-level experience in commercial or industrial plumbing, pipefitting, or steam-fitting with emphasis on interior renovations. Demonstrated experience with black iron, cast iron, copper, stainless, glass, and plastic pipe for laboratories and other specialized facility applications. Ability to effectively interact and communicate with building clients, stakeholders, co-workers, and supervisors in a team environment. Demonstrated ability to produce quality work from drawings, specifications, construction standards, and written or verbal instructions with direct supervision. Basic computer skills; word processing, email and Internet.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$32,000 + depending on qualifications
