Job Summary

The Janitorial Training Program is an intensive 480-hour program to be completed in no more than 6 months and designed for Vocational Rehabilitation referrals only. The program targets individuals with barriers to employment that have little or no prior work history, a sporadic work history, and who have an interest in learning skills associated with janitorial/housekeeping work. A Certificate of Achievement will be given for the successful completion of the program. The focus of the program is on skill acquisition and development through a paid internship within Goodwill Industries Janitorial Training Department. The program will include technical skill development and soft skills training to maximize participants' employability in the community. Individuals will also be provided with case management services throughout the duration of the training program if needed. Individuals are assessed on a weekly basis. All graduates of the program are required to successfully pass the testing process.

The Janitorial Training Program Participant will follow a plan that will teach janitorial skills allowing an individual to keep the premises of the office building or other commercial or institutional buildings in a clean and orderly condition. Cleans office areas, classrooms, hallways, lobbies, breakrooms/cafeterias, restrooms, elevators, stairways, locker rooms, and other assigned work areas.

The Janitorial Program is offered at 1635 W. Michigan Street.

Shifts are 4 hours Monday through Friday; morning or afternoon start times.

Example Duties and Activities

  • Cleans and disinfects the furniture and equipment.

  • Polishes metalwork.

  • Wipes down walls, ceilings, and woodwork.

  • Washes windows, door panels, and sills.

  • Empties wastebaskets and empties and cleans ashtrays.

  • Transports trash and waste to the disposal area.

  • Replenishes bathroom supplies.

  • Communicates with Goodwill management and customers when appropriate and as needed.

  • Transports small equipment or tools between departments.

  • Sets up tables and chairs in auditoriums, gymnasiums, classrooms, or halls.

  • Cleans and polishes lighting fixtures, marble surfaces, and trim.

  • Vacuums, sweeps, and mops floor surfaces and mats.

  • Assists with scrubbing, waxing, and polishing hard surface floors.

  • Assists with cleaning rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies.

Required Competencies

  • Communication Skills - Gives full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to recognize the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Reads and comprehends basic written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents.

  • General Labor Skills - Is able to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions and deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

  • Safety Awareness - Recognizes the risks in activities, applies the right measures to control and manage those risks, and ensures all safety protocols are followed.

  • Janitorial Skills - Performs cleaning activities in specific areas by hand, such as removing dust from furniture, blinds, windowsills, etc. Sweeps and mops floors. Cleans and disinfects bathrooms with cleaning products. Is able to learn how to properly use janitorial tools and equipment including but not limited to dust cloths, vacuum cleaners, and cleaning chemical solutions.

  • Moderate to Hard Physical Work - is regularly required to walk and frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Can manage frequent exposure to dust, dirt, debris, and dust particles in the air. Will be regularly exposed to slippery floors and the moving mechanical parts of floor cleaning equipment. The noise level is generally low.

  • Visual Acuity - Has close and distance vision abilities and is able to adjust focus.

  • Background Screening - All candidates must pass a pre-employment background check.
