Position description

The Principal Manager will have oversight of the management of several core facilities under the Office of Research and Economic Development. The Core Facilities include the Stem Cell Instrumentation Foundry (SCIF), the Imaging and Microscopy Facility (IMF), the Stable Isotope Laboratory (SIL), the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Facility, and the Environmental Analytical Laboratory (EAL).

Key responsibilities will include:

* Oversee and manage the daily and long-term operations of facilities. Design and develop research program/project components, resolve issues related to projects in core research facilities, assess facility program effectiveness and recommend changes, coordinate varied and competing requirements associated with managing innovative projects, and manage space utilization.

* Manage Core Facilities staff and the overall core work processes and metrics of the projects to ensure quality is delivered at every step. Core staff will include one academic program management officer, four project scientists, and one staff research associate.

* Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for equipment management and to ensure laboratory safety and overall organization and cleanliness.

* Participates in long-range facility planning and decision-making with regard to current and future capacity and technology needs. Serves on committees representing the Core Facilities.

* Identifies new initiatives and implementation plans to foster continued growth of the Core Facilities size and reputation.

* Research space management, budgeting, and recharge administration in core facilities.

* Promote research/scholarly activities. Participate with Core Facilities users/staff in publishing research in peer-reviewed journals, and collaborate with faculty on research grants and research projects.

* May also serve as a reviewer in the federal funding agency's panel review process, review manuscripts, and serve on editorial boards for peer-reviewed journals.

* Give talks at national and international conferences/meetings representing the Core Facilities and the University foundry communications, outreach, and research updates.

* Develops and executes a plan for financing research project activities to ensure ongoing sustainability of projects. Identifies new initiatives and implementation plans to foster the growth of facility size and reputation.

* Collaborate with faculty on strategic planning to identify and establish new core research facilities. Work with faculty to identify future instrumentation needs.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications

Ph.D. in Science, Engineering, or related fields such as Physics or Chemistry.

Working knowledge of practices and procedures related to facility maintenance. To include equipment operation and management.

Knowledge of common financial principles and experience working with budgets.

Demonstrated supervisory, leadership, and personnel management skills to hire, manage, and evaluate others effectively.

Communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and faculty verbally and in writing. Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.

Written communication skills to prepare a variety of correspondence, reports, policies and procedures, and training documents. Proficient in Microsoft Office.

Organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes. Ability to prioritize workload and handle multiple tasks with attention to detail.

Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information and use professional judgment.

1-2 years of facilities management experience.

Experience with generating extramural funding, research, and grant proposal development.

Preferred qualifications

Experience with UC financial business systems
