Position description

University of California, San Francisco

Department of Radiation Oncology

Division of Medical Physics

Instructor/Assistant/Associate (In Res, Clin X, HS)

The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco, seeks to recruit outstanding candidates at the Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor level for the Division of Medical Physics, capable of performing at a high level of productivity in both research and clinical areas. The Department of Radiation Oncology at UCSF has state-of-the-art clinical facilities and an emphasis on innovation and excellence in patient care and science. The Department continues to have a vibrant team of physics faculty with a strong commitment to research and development.

The candidate will perform independent and fundable research in areas related to medical physics, including but not limited to radiotherapy and medical imaging. Besides protected time for research, clinical efforts will be expected, including the development of new clinical programs pertinent to GammaKnife and Linac-based radiosurgery, CyberKnife and linac-based SBRT, HDR and LDR brachytherapy, intraoperative radiotherapy, support for superficial therapy, machine acceptance testing and commissioning, treatment planning support, linac and patient-specific QA, chart checking, and other clinical physics duties. The candidate will be expected to cover the above and other physics-related clinical activities at all three department locations, as required and commensurate with the position and funding level.

Candidates must demonstrate strong potential for high-impact research, including an excellent publication record. Prior funding or research grant application experience is highly desired. A doctoral degree in medical physics or related field, board certification or eligibility with the American Board of Radiology in radiotherapy physics, and work relevant to the field of clinical Medical Physics are required.

The candidate will be expected to teach medical physics courses provided by the Department of Radiation Oncology for medical and physics students, residents, and fellows, as well as contribute to continuing medical education efforts, including the departmental annual scientific conference and scientific participation at medical physics society conferences.

The Division of Medical Physics includes nineteen full-time faculty physicists involved in both academic and clinical activities, seven hospital physicists who provide support for clinical activities, and additional dosimetry and support staff. The Division is funded by nine major concurrent NIH awards, including R01s, U24, and R44. Strong mentorship and collegiality create an ideal environment for the candidate to thrive. The Physics Division runs a CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics Residency program with four residents and hosts many postdocs and graduate students. The Division has established relationships with UCSF and UC Berkeley Bioengineering, Computational Precision Health, and Nuclear Engineering graduate programs. A CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics Ph.D. program has been recently established with Berkeley Nuclear Engineering. The candidate will be able to recruit and mentor top graduate students from these programs. Additional collaboration opportunities with PIs inside and outside UCSF in the SF Bay Area are unlimited. A start-up package will be individually negotiated based on the candidate's qualifications.

The Department has three separate sites, divided amongst specialties, located at Mission Bay, Mount Zion, and Parnassus campus within San Francisco. The Department offers a wide range of state-of-the-art technology, including Varian TrueBeams, TrueBeam STx, Elekta Versa, a Tomotherapy unit, a Gamma Knife ICON, a Cyberknife VSI, a 3T Siemens MR simulator, two 4D-capable wide bore 24-slice CT scanners, comprehensive Hyperthermia program, active programs in intra-operative radiotherapy (including two Mobetron and one Intrabeam), HDR and LDR brachytherapy, advanced techniques for Cranio-spinal irradiation, Total-body-irradiation, and the treatment of emergency patients, IGRT with MV Cone beam CT (CBCT), EPID and OBI, keV CBCT and 4D CBCT, visionRT, Brainlab Exactrac, and gating capabilities. In addition, the Department offers proton irradiation of ocular melanoma using a cyclotron located at the UC Davis campus. Treatment planning capabilities include Pinnacle, Eclipse, iPlan, GammaPlan, Multiplan, Oncentra, Raystation, MIM, and Velocity. The Division actively collaborates with leading industrial partners for clinical and technological innovation. The Department has a progressive roadmap for the continuing adoption of cutting-edge technologies.
