Position title: Carr Lab Diving Field Technician Seasonal Pool (Junior Specialist) Salary range:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year. "Off-scale salaries", i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. The full-time, annual salary range for this position is $51,300 - $56,900. The selected candidates' pay will be pro-rated based on their appointments' percentage of time. A reasonable estimate for a full-time (100%) monthly salary is $4,275 - $4,742. Percent time:
Variable, 50%-100%. Due to the weather and equipment-dependent nature of the work, the hours for this position may vary from week-to-week. Anticipated start:
As early as may 2024. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments to the Junior Specialist rank made during the 2024 field season (May through December). Initial appointments with effective dates outside of this recruitment period will require an alternative open recruitment. Degree must be completed by June 13, 2024 before employment can begin. Initial appointment will be for a duration of five to seven months, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding and work. Under the direction of Professor Mark Carr, with oversight from senior Specialist, Dan Malone, the technicians will assist with interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in marine ecology, population genetics, fisheries, conservation of nearshore species, and oceanographic drivers of ecological processes. Successful candidates will also participate in a large-scale kelp forest and oceanographic monitoring program along the west coast. SCUBA diving is an essential function of this job. General responsibilities include: participate in SCUBA based ecological monitoring surveys of kelp forests along the California Coast, coordinate and oversee staff and resources for on-going research projects; plan and organize logistics for local and remote field missions; independently develop and refine sampling design and protocols as needed; collect and perform quality control and basic analysis of data as well as organize and modify project databases; maintain small boats and vehicles; and contribute to the development of technical reports and grant proposals. Given the nature of the position, the diving field technicians must successfully work independently and as part of a team and they must consistently demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills. Applicants with experience in the following areas strongly encouraged to apply: MOTC certification and experience operating small (15-25') vessels in coastal waters of central California; leading groups of research divers in potentially harsh field conditions; and/or training and overseeing technical field assistants.
