We are proud and excited to offer summer internships for 2024 across several of our different office locations and are currently seeking a Technical Services Intern to join our team in Chicago.

Our B.L.U.E. (Build, Learn, Understand, Enrich) Summer Internship Program is purposefully designed to inspire your imagination and help you guide your career with purpose. You'll be an integral part of McKinstry with hands-on experience, mentorship and a healthy dose of fun. Our program delivers depth and real experience so that you can truly evaluate potential career paths within the work we do.

What we look for in our Technical Services Interns:



  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel (priority), PowerPoint, Outlook, and AutoCAD required; working knowledge of SharePoint preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specs, contracts, proposals, estimates, and other regularly encountered items.
  • Data analysis experience preferred.
  • Building system knowledge/experience and interest preferred.
  • College Junior standing or higher is required.
  • Working toward a Mechanical Engineering degree, resource/energy management, or a related engineering field is required.
  • Availability in Summer 2024 (May/June start until August/September depending on school); part-time availability after Summer preferred
  • Must be 18 years of age or older


What are our Technical Services Interns responsible for:

Project Support



  • Demonstrates an understanding of basic engineering concepts related to energy efficiency, building systems, heat transfer, fluid flow, and thermodynamics or sustainability.
  • Supports sustainability consulting activities. Includes energy and water efficiency calculations and carbon calculation standards.
  • Supports client sustainability and energy efficiency projects.
  • Site visits to set up data logger deployment.
  • Data analysis, including data entry and review.
  • Archiving and filing of completed projects.


Energy and Sustainability Research



  • Research new HVAC and/or lighting technology options.
  • Coordinate with McKinstry Capital for federal grants.
  • Research rebate and rebate trends.
  • Research savings calculations.
  • Utilizes both manual and packaged calculations software
