Position title:
Pre-six College 1 Lecturer
Salary range:
A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach the standard five-credit course is $8,282 - $14,100 (based on salary points 1-19). Please see the UCSC Salary Scales and refer to the Non-senate Instructional (NSI) Unit 18 Pre-six Lecturer Academic Year scale. Instructional Workload Credit (IWC) valuation may vary and the course salary will be adjusted accordingly. Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year (see Summer Session Faculty and Lecturer Pay).
Percent time:
Variable, based on the course load assigned (one standard, five-credit course is 37.5%)
Anticipated start:
Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit's instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments beginning in spring quarter 2024 through spring quarter 2025. Initial appointments made after this period must be made through other recruitments.
Position duration:
Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position description

The University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers to teach sections of College 1, the first course of UCSC's Academic Literacy Curriculum. College 1 is a required core course designed to help students develop academic and civic proficiency in reading and critical thinking. Students will develop understanding of "academic ethos" and habits of mind and practice that are tied to a sense of belonging and academic success. This course prepares students for success in all other UCSC courses. There is no placement exam for College 1; enrollment in this course is not tracked by proficiency in reading, writing, or critical thinking.

Instructors meet with a seminar of 25-30 students two or three times per week and teach material from an established syllabus; assign and evaluate student work; meet with students in small groups; prepare grades, which may include narrative evaluations of student performance; hold weekly office hours; and carry out other typical instructional duties.

Each of our ten Colleges have a shared curriculum but with a different emphasis:

Basic Qualifications

Applicants must possess the following qualifications at the time they submit their application. There are no exceptions to this requirement.



  • M.A/M.S.; or a B.A./B.S. degree and completion of at least one year of a Ph.D. program; or a B.A./B.S. degree and at least two years of teaching experience at the college level. Equivalent foreign degrees will be considered.
  • Experience teaching critical and analytical reading, thinking, and/or writing at the college level.


Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:



  • Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in a field related to the above-mentioned focuses of the colleges.

  • Demonstrated record of achievement in teaching critical and analytical reading, thinking, and/or writing at a four-year college or university.
  • Demonstrated record of working effectively with students from a wide range of social, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with current theory and research in academic literacy and discourse pedagogy, or related topics.
  • Professional expertise or research in the area of liberal arts or a record of creative or research activity.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the barriers facing traditionally underrepresented groups and your past and/or future contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion through teaching and professional or public service (for more information see https://apo.ucsc.edu/diversity.html).
