Position Summary:

The Communications Associate supports external and internal communications at Briya Public Charter School - a leading two-generation school serving immigrant parents and their young children in Washington, DC. Briya is a Tier One Public Charter School, consistently achieving the highest educational outcomes through its innovative, family-centric programming.

At Briya, parents study English, from basic to advanced levels, in classes that combine practical literacy, technology, civic engagement, and leadership skills. Adult students also prepare for careers in high-demand fields through workforce development programs. At the same time, students' young children grow and thrive in Briya's high-quality early childhood classes, which include a focus on outdoor learning.

Briya has a strategic partnership and co-location with Mary's Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center, further strengthening student families with comprehensive medical, dental, and social services.

Through a wide variety of writing, graphic design, and administrative support, the Communications Associate contributes to smooth internal operations, student recruitment, and the school's public presence as a leading two-generation educational institution.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The position may include, but is not limited to, the following tasks and responsibilities:

Internal Communications



  • Create materials including flyers, staff directories, and calendars to support school events and programs (including gathering content, graphic design, and translation when applicable).
  • Create monthly staff newsletter, including soliciting items from staff members and laying out newsletter in Adobe InDesign
  • Create welcome packets for new staff members
  • Assist with applications for student, staff, and schoolwide awards
  • Organize and maintain stock of Briya print materials at each school location
  • Assist with preparation for visits from the media and other outside guests
  • Collaborate with Briya data team/registrar to ensure all media releases are up to date
  • Take photos for and print student IDs


External Communications



  • Assist with strategy for and create social media posts (including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn) to support the school's communications plan and student advocacy efforts
  • Maintain up-to-date content on Briya website and Briya student website
  • Manage Google Analytics for Briya website
  • Lay out, send, and manage email list for mass emails to partners and supporters


Student Recruitment



  • Meet regularly and collaborate with Outreach Team and Communications Manager on recruitment events and initiatives
  • Create and manage social media ads, graphics, and flyers for student recruitment in key student languages
  • Coordinate responses to direct messages from prospective students on social media in collaboration with outreach team
  • Research, purchase, and maintain inventory of premiums for outreach use and student/staff gifts
  • Meet bi-weekly with Mary's Center Marketing Team to aid in student recruitment and inter-organizational understanding/collaboration


Executive & Administrative Support



  • Record minutes of school meetings, prepare meeting materials, and provide other administrative support as needed
  • Send donor tax receipts monthly, support executive donor communications, and manage donation records
  • Support school events with tasks such as invitation management, setup, catering orders, decor, and on-site support
  • Assist the Executive Director with special projects and administrative tasks as needed


Visual Identity & Photography



  • Ensure all Briya materials (including flyers, graphics, and slide presentations) adhere to visual identity guidelines
  • Take and edit photos to support all communications platforms, using best practices for high-quality composition and selecting subjects with attention to portraying students and staff of diverse nationalities, races, ages, genders, and other identities.
  • Create videos for student orientation, information sessions, and other uses
  • Manage photos through online storage

Education and/or Experience -



  • Bachelor's degree in communications or related field, or relevant work experience
  • Excellent communication skills in English required, and Spanish, Amharic, or French preferred
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously
  • Experience working with people of diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong sense of graphic design
  • Strong writing skills
  • Experience with social media
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite preferred but not required
