Victims Advocate Network (VAN) is a community-led, first response team comprised of licensed social workers and trained volunteer advocates, working in partnership with UTPD, Austin Area Emergency Services, and other campus and community partners to provide immediate and ongoing emotional and practical support to students, faculty, staff, and visitor victims and witnesses impacted by crime or distressing events. Purpose

Provides short-term case management for UT staff, students, and visitors that have been impacted by crime or other distressing events on campus. Reports to Victim's Services Unit Supervisor.

Responsibilities
  • Provide short-term case management for victims, survivors, and persons impacted by crime and distressing events on or near the UT-Austin campus, including follow-ups in person, by phone, and email.
  • Serve VAN advocate role including some on-call availability for response on scene on UT campus to victims of crime and distressing events. Supports VAN volunteer advocates with debriefing and processing their VAN responses, either while on call if needed immediately, or during scheduled work hours.
  • Provide crisis support, needs and safety assessment, safety planning, and resource linkage for persons navigating concerns around criminal or traumatic events including (but not limited to) assault, sexual assault, intimate partner or domestic violence, harassment or stalking, fraud, and fatalities. Ability to listen with compassion, empathy, and nonjudgement. Secure and deploy resources effectively and efficiently and gain the confidence and trust of fellow advocates and survivors through honesty, integrity, and authenticity.
  • Provide ongoing case management, such as coordinating with campus partners or community resources, assistance with Crime Victims Compensation, police interview accompaniment, providing psychoeducation, and brief crisis and emotional support. Must have the capacity to engage with complex clients, skills in active listening, de-escalation, risk assessment, able to build constructive relationships, advocate for change effectively, and document services.
  • Assists Victim Services Unit Supervisor with record keeping, data collection, and administrative duties. Ensures call program is routed daily to ensure VAN operation is maintained. Attends and assists with presentations and VAN promotion at training events, campus meetings, and events as needed. Drive University vehicles. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4. Conducts clinical supervision of Social Work interns in coordination with their Social Work Practicum placement. (If you have had master's degree in social work for more than 2 years.)

Marginal & Incidental Functions

Perform other related functions as assigned. Work is performed in accordance with normal trade practices and is inspected for conformity to standards, quality and quantity by journey-level employees or supervisor. Required to carry University cell phone.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in Social Work, Victim's Services, Psychology, or some other related human or social services field. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Prior experience providing crisis intervention. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

Collaborative approach and ability to work effectively with a team. Understanding of and adherence to highest professional and ethical standards. Competence with basic computer functions.

Preferred Qualifications

Texas Licensed Clinical Social Worker. (LCSW) with at least 2 years' experience post Master's degree. Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW). Clinical supervision of Social Work interns experience preferred. Prior experience in a multidisciplinary work environment such as a college/university, hospital or other medical setting, residential treatment facility, or Police Department. Fluent in Spanish.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
