Your Role: As the Community Impact Intern, you will gain skills within diversity, equity, and inclusion by facilitating community engagement processes, building relationships with Black, Indigenous, and communities of color. This position will involve significant work outside of the office participating in training, site visits, community partner meetings, and community events.
To be considered for this intern position you must be a current student enrolled in an Oregon/Vancouver, WA area school for the duration of employment. Spring 2024 graduates will not be eligible for this internship unless documentation of continued educational classes (graduate school related to the field) can be provided at the time of application.
Duration: Expected end date on or around May 28, 2025, with full-time work during school breaks and part-time during school year. Starting hourly rate at $16.70.

Essential Job Duties

  • Research and Design
    • Support the research and design of innovative engagement strategies that focus on engaging, learning about, and capturing the priorities of Black, Indigenous and communities of color.
  • Data Collection, Entry, and Analysis
    • Collect and analyze data from surveys, focus group transcripts, and interviews identify themes, research questions, and areas of focus.
  • Event Participation
    • Represent the Port at committees, partner events, and Port-sponsored outreach events and activities; particularly those involving tribes, Indigenous communities, communities of color, youth, and/or student-serving organizations.
  • Database Management
    • Entering data and incoming requests into excel spreadsheets, Microsoft Forms, and other software programs.
  • Administrative Support
    • Supporting the Community Impact Program by tracking emails, scheduling with community partners, and responding to inquiries from community members.
  • Social Media Outreach
    • Support creating population-specific content for flyers,
      newsletters, and the strategic use of social media platforms such as YouTube,
      Facebook, SnapChat, and Instagram.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university (community colleges, trade schools, and certificate programs).
    • Students who are not taking classes over summer break are eligible and will be asked to provide proof of registration prior to the start of the fall term/semester to meet the conditions of employment.
  • Student must also provide current unofficial transcript at time of application.
  • Maintenance of a minimum 2.5 grade point average and continued enrollment in classes pertinent to the internship is required.
Demonstrated knowledge:
  • Knowledge of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging principles and
    practices.
  • Strong understanding of non-homogeneity of black, indigenous and
    communities of color from and residing in Oregon.
  • Familiarity or experience working/living/volunteering in East Multnomah County,
    North Portland and/or Hillsboro/Washington County.
  • Demonstrate commitment to valuing differences among individuals and a passion for being inclusive.
  • Proven team player that shows the utmost respect for others.
  • Students with strong interests, work experience or course work in Indigenous Traditional Ecological and Cultural Knowledge (ITECK) political science, nonprofit leadership, community organizing, climate justice, urban planning is preferred.
Demonstrated skills:
  • Work in a team environment and manage time to complete tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Experience and/or interest in understanding the use of social media as a public engagement, behavior and/or social change tool.
  • Work collaboratively with people from different backgrounds, values, and professional responsibilities, and/or experience working in a multi-cultural setting.
  • Organize and track multiple projects, tasks, and information.

Supplemental and Selection Information

SELECTION PROCESS (tentative schedule):

  1. A minimum qualification evaluation of education, training, and experience of submitted application packets will take place by Human Resources the week of April 28, 2024.

  2. A Subject Matter Expert (SME) Panel will perform an evaluation of experience and training taken from your employment application materials including any responses to the supplemental questionnaire.

  3. Our goal is to schedule oral panel interviews with candidates that successfully passed the SME evaluation step approximately the week of May 13, 2024. The successful candidate will be notified after interviews are complete, with a tentative start date on or around June 2024.
