Director of Advancement Operations and Major Gifts

UCH Central Office The Director of Advancement Operations and Major Gifts manages the daily operations and administrative functions of the Advancement Department while managing a major gift portfolio of 75+ identified prospects to cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts in support of the strategic priorities of United Church Homes. Reporting to the Vice President of Advancement, the Director works collaboratively with VP to advance defined fundraising strategies to meet organizational goals.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

  • Responsible for managing the daily operations of the Advancement Department including but not limited to gift processing and stewardship, annual giving appeals and special event fundraisers, donor recognition events, donor communications, database management including moves management systems, planning, assigning, and managing department work priorities and deadlines, and evaluating performance and resolving problems.
  • Implement strategies that support best practices and efficiencies for data analytics and research, stewardship and cultivation of donors, donor communications, annual giving and special event fundraisers. Monitor staff performance, orient, train, motivate, counsel and make recommendations regarding staff member separations in accordance with organizational values, mission and policy.
  • Oversee the establishment and planning of annual giving appeals and special event fundraisers, and donor recognition events.
  • Facilitate and ensure effective gift processing and stewardship practices are established and implemented as well as assessed periodically to ensure best practice methodologies are in place.
  • Coordinate effective database management which includes establishing and managing department work priorities and deadlines.
  • Leverage systems data to shape and refine Advancement approaches, activities and goals.
  • Direct supervision and professional growth of the Annual Giving and Communications Manager and the Prospect Research and Database Manager; working collaboratively with each to support fundraising objectives and meet priorities and deadlines.
  • Actively research, analyze and recommend relevant progress reporting for use in Board reports, organizational reports and other related reports.
  • Support VP Advancement in the assessment of departmental capacity and capability and recommends actions and development opportunities for Advancement staff.
  • Major Gift Officer in assigned territories responsible for managing a portfolio of 75+ prospects consisting of individuals, corporations, and foundations focusing on the growth of major gifts over $5,000+.
  • Responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding assigned prospects, building strategic relationships and advancing the mission of UCH and the culture of philanthropy.
  • Prepare written, major gift proposals and solicit gifts through face-to-face meetings with individuals that may include volunteers, community leaders, and UCH leadership.
  • Provide support for development of grant funding requests with training (when applicable) to Housing management and staff to execute local funding requests.
  • Provide support for development, coordination and management of the Advancement budget ensuring revenue and expenses align with budget projections. Assists in ongoing budgetary review of the Advancement department as well as the annual budget development process.
  • Work collaboratively with VP of Advancement to develop departmental fundraising goals, funding priorities and annual initiatives to support the objectives, assist with developing reports that communicate and illustrate outcomes and results etc.

Skills & Abilities

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree (four-year college or technical school): Required. Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) preferred.
  • Experience: Two (2) to five (5) years' experience in non-profit fundraising including demonstrated ability in managing an annual giving program and contributing to major gift work, donor relations, public relations, customer relations, institutional relations and community outreach
  • Computer Skills: Must be proficient in operating a computer, relevant software including Raiser's Edge NXT including events module, mobile giving, electronic appeals, the Internet and basic office equipment
  • Certifications & Licenses: Must obtain and maintain mandatory, state, federal requirements and certifications for practice or occupation as applicable; Valid driver's license required
