Department:PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT Organizational Unit:Roadway and Bridge (50000074) Position Type:Permanent Full Time/Part Time:Full Time Open Until Filled. $20.23 to $22.25 hourly. Actual salary negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Central Area/Merritt Island. Work schedule is Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.Performs entry-level crafts and trades work in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy equipment and may perform related manual labor. Employees may rotate among various pieces of equipment or may be permanently assigned to a specific piece of equipment. REQUIREMENTS: One (1) year of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy equipment, including front-end loaders, rubber tire back-hoe, or other similar type of excavator, used in the construction of roads and drainage projects;ORsix (6) months of on-the-job training within the County in the operation of minor heavy equipment and be able to demonstrate the ability to achieve departmental standards for operating equipment;ORsuccessful completion of a six (6) month heavy equipment operator training program from an accredited school. Successful completion of coursework in heavy equipment operation at a post-secondary school may be substituted on a year for year basis for a maximum of one (1) year (1,080 class hours [1 school year] = 1 year of experience; 120 class hours = 1 month of experience). Additional qualifying education and/or experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Must possess, or obtain prior to employment, a valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver's license and maintain said license during the term of employment. Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the safe and effective operation of a front-end loader or excavator and be able to pass a skills test. This is heavy physical work that involves exposure to dirt, dust, noise, fumes, insects, working in and around moving machinery and traffic, and extreme weather conditions. In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee will be required to perform emergency duties as directed.
