THE POSITION

The Department of Corrections at Cambridge Springs is seeking one student working toward a master's degree in social work to enter an unpaid internship for the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this internship, you will perform inmate classification services at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) Cambridge Springs. You will assist inmates with personal and family problems, teach inmates appropriate conflict resolution skills, and interview inmates to facilitate their institutional adjustment.

Utilizing a multi-disciplinary approach, you will coordinate treatment objectives, programming, activities, counseling, and educational services for inmates. You will facilitate compliance and behavioral changes through the implementation of Prescriptive Program Plans that include expectations regarding work, housing, overall behavior, academic and vocational programming, and recommended programming based on needs and assessments.

Additional duties will include analyzing aptitude and interest tests, compiling socio-demographic histories, and developing case records. You will be required to utilize assessment scores to determine recommended programs and risk levels. You will participate in parole planning and make recommendations for re-entry services and Community Corrections Center placements. You will also write parole reports in preparation for Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole (PBPP) interviews.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • This is a full-time or part-time unpaid internship during Fall 2024 and Spring 2025.
  • Full-time work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch. Part-time employment will also be considered, with work hours of 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM or 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Internship Requirements:

  • You must be actively pursuing a master's degree in social work with fewer than two years remaining in the program.
  • You must be in good academic standing (2.0 GPA or higher).

Additional Requirements:
  • Your application must contain a letter of recommendation from your college advisor.
  • You must remain enrolled in a master's degree program throughout the internship.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements:
  • You must pass a background investigation.
  • A conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination.
