Introduction to the job

We are a part of ASML, located in beautiful San Diego. ASML provides chipmakers like Intel, Samsung, TSMC, Global Foundries and others with everything they need - hardware, software and services - to mass produce patterns on silicon, helping to increase the value and lower the cost of a semiconductor chip. Our key technology is the lithography system, which brings together high-tech hardware and advanced software to control the chip manufacturing process down to the picometer. Our vision is a world in which semiconductor technology is everywhere and helps to tackle society's toughest challenges.

We are presenting you with a unique and exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and innovative Technology Development team, focused on conceiving and demonstrating the technologies required for next generations of high-power extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light sources. Based on a laser produced plasma (LPP), our light source relies on a wide range of unique and challenging technologies, ranging from laser light amplification and high-power optical systems to laser produced plasma for EUV generation, electro-optical signal detection and algorithm-based actuation for process control. You are invited to bring your passion, knowledge and expertise in areas of applied physics, plasmas, metrology, optics, controls, lasers, and experiment design to push the boundaries of these technologies forward.

Role and responsibilities

  • Leadership over portfolio of research projects (spans multiple source product generations and technology readiness levels) that enable the EUV Source roadmap within the S-Next research program.

  • Manage triple constraint: timing, budget, and resourcing, of the entire Research portfolio.

  • Responsible for setting program level objectives that primarily allow the realization of the Source Research (Tech Dev) learning goals, and provide System Engineering guidance towards the product roadmap and help D&E derisk the product.

  • Provide overall program direction in alignment with the technology roadmap; rationalizes the overall picture of each of the project teams into a single coherent program view.

  • Secures execution toward key infrastructure items required by the technology roadmap which can include long-lead SW, EDEV, facilities, HW, etc., design and build efforts.

  • Interfaces with program leaders in the Development and Engineering to ensure that the Research program is delivering to its internal customers a package of learnings/specs/HW that satisfies their needs.

  • Works proactively with Engineering and Factory to ensure on-time delivery of early FuMo hardware.

  • Responsible for schedule, budgets, costs, performance targets, resource and execution plans to drive operational activities.

  • Lead annual performance team Total Allocation Process (TAP).

  • Actively manage the budget and provide monthly reports on financial performance to executive management.

  • Lead the project community by guiding, mentoring and coaching the PLs, providing them clear direction and motivating them, and know when to be in the dance with the PLs.

  • Ensures proper documentation is completed for each activity within the project, and that adequate documentation exists for the program, SE and D&E.

  • Defines key milestones and deliverables for constituent projects - ensures sufficient planning granularity to identify tension and risks in the execution plan.

  • Responsible for securing engineering and resourcing support to enable rapid prototyping of hardware, software, electronics, etc., to support the technology program.

  • Proactively scan for timing, resource, and scope gaps and drive actions to recover.

  • Participate in top-level 3iab department manager and main architect/researcher, to successfully identify key scientific learning objectives and corresponding experimental design which will further the technological progress of the EUV source.

  • Lead quarterly project reviews to provide visibility to stakeholders on progress, status, accomplishments and roadblocks.

  • Report issues and manage risk, providing escalation path for resolution of issues affecting the Masterplan.

  • Willing to work at flexible times as required based on project and business needs.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Education and experience

  • BS or MS degree with 10+ years of relevant experience in physics, plasma engineering, mechanical engineering, photonics or equivalent technical field.

  • Possess very strong skills acquired through advanced training, study and experience.

  • Successful demonstration of project management and leadership over the full life-cycle of a project, with corresponding successful completion and delivery of project objectives.

  • Understanding of scientific research methods and strong curiosity.

  • The successful candidate will not only have excelled in their technical field, but will have demonstrated inter-personal and communications strengths.

  • Hands-on experience with complex system design and build, characterization, troubleshooting.

  • Excellent leadership & organization skills, and ability to clearly and logically communicate ideas and knowledge to various audiences.

  • Budget management for >$40M/year programs.

Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead a research project involving multiple stakeholders and constraints.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a part of a team and lead investigation and research efforts.
