About the Georgia Tech Library
The Georgia Tech Library is a member of the University System of Georgia library consortia, Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education (ARCHE), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL), and the Association for College and Research Libraries (ACRL). The Georgia Tech Library has a unique and progressive service model that relies heavily on technology and electronic formats. Electronic resources account for 79% of our overall content, 98% of the Library's content expenditures and 99% of our content usage and the majority of our print collections are held in a high-density, climate-controlled storage facility in collaboration with Emory University Libraries. Job Summary

Georgia Tech Library seeks a creative, analytical individual with strong commitment to engagement for the position of Intellectual Property (IP) Librarian. This position contributes to and supports a culture of entrepreneurship and commercialization at Georgia Tech by collaborating with stakeholders such as the VentureLab, CreateX, and the Office of Technology Licensing. This person provides IP programming and outreach for the patent, trademark, tangible property, and licensing needs of the Georgia Tech community. Individuals will plan and provide course-integrated instruction, workshops, and one-on-one consultations on intellectual property. This position also supports library and campus efforts in connecting to external organizations like the USPTO.

This is a 12-month faculty position with an effort distribution of 80% librarianship, 10% scholarship, and 10% professional service to the library profession. The Georgia Tech Library Faculty may enjoy flexible work schedules, teleworking, professional development, and a healthy work-life balance. The library is a 24/7 institution; as such, some nights and weekends may be necessary.

Responsibilities

Provide and improve library services and resources; enrich the research, learning, and scholarship of the Georgia Tech community through the following:

80% Librarianship

  • Collaborate with key campus stakeholders, including the Office of Technology Licensing, VentureLab, CreateX, School of Public Policy, and Scheller College of Business in intellectual property and commercialization.
  • Develop robust partnership with the USPTO to provide in-depth training to the campus community.
  • Inform stakeholders of changes in case law and how it applies to the University System of Georgia and Georgia Tech
  • Communicate trends in intellectual property to stakeholders and the campus community.
  • Teach intellectual property topics via workshops and course-integrated instruction to Teach undergraduate and graduate students as well as Georgia Tech employees.
  • Create and lead engaging programming on intellectual property with the commercialization ecosystem at Georgia Tech
  • Provide individualized consultations on topics such as prior art searching, trademarks, and market research in either in person or virtual modalities.
  • Develop asynchronous tutorials to support intellectual property topics.
  • Supplement in-person instruction in Academic Engagement for multimedia, data, or information skills.
  • Advocate for tools or training, such as InnovationQ, to support prior art searching, market research, or other endeavors connected to intellectual property.
  • Work with Academic Engagement team members to update and create departmental workflows and documentation to enable knowledge transfer.
  • Other duties as assigned.

10% Scholarship and Creative Endeavors

  • According to expectations for library faculty members, contribute professionally through scholarship and service to the university and external communities.

10% Service

  • Foster positive relations with faculty, students, and staff and promote the Library's commitment to the values of the Institute.
  • Serve on library and university committees as assigned.
Required Qualifications

This position vacancy will be filled at the rank of Librarian II, Librarian III, or Librarian IV. The final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Non-tenure Track Academic Faculty ranks as outlined in section 3.2.2 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook

Librarian II

  • Appointment to this rank requires an appropriate terminal degree, typically an American Library Association (ALA) - accredited master's degree, a degree in a subject related to archival work, and/or in the appropriate area of specialization.
  • Either evidence of scholarship or evidence of service is required, but not both. Evidence of scholarship or evidence of service should be commensurate with effort distribution.
  • 5 years of professional experience in academic libraries.

Librarian III

  • Appointment to this rank requires an appropriate terminal degree, typically an American Library Association (ALA) - accredited master's degree, a degree in a subject related to archival work, and/or in the appropriate area of specialization.
  • A strong record of scholarship and service demonstrating significant contributions to the librarian/archivist profession.
  • 10 years of professional experience in academic libraries.

Librarian IV

  • Appointment to this rank requires an appropriate terminal degree, typically an American Library Association (ALA) - accredited master's degree, a degree in a subject related to archival work, and/or in the appropriate area of specialization.
  • A strong record of scholarship and service demonstrating the highest standards of professional contributions to the librarian/archivist profession and are recognized widely by peers.
  • 15 years of professional experience in academic libraries.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science, Master of Business Administration, Juris Doctorate, or related degree in area; Bachelor of Science in Biology, Computer Science, or a field of Engineering or Master of Laws in intellectual property.
  • At least 5 years' experience of prior art searching, patents metadata, and trademarks.
  • Experience with commercialization and/or bench to market.
  • Knowledge of tangible property.
  • Experience with tools such as InnovationQ, Derwent, ESPACENET, and others.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in intellectual property issues as they pertain to current and emerging trends in data, software, and computation.
Proposed Salary

This is a benefits-eligible position with a salary range of $72,400 - $96,000 commensurate with education and experience.
