Job Description

GTRI's Counterproliferation & Counter Weapons of Mass Destruction Branch in the Advanced Concepts Laboratory seeks qualified candidates for the Counterproliferation and Counter WMD Intern Position for Summer 2024. The role of this position is to develop technologies and system-level capabilities in the areas of biological, chemical, radiological & nuclear protection and defeat.

The Advanced Warfighting Technologies Division provides technology development and tactical analysis for countering weapons of mass destruction, threat assessment and wargaming of ground-maneuver and asymmetric warfare, rapid technology integration and prototyping for rapid reaction warfighting capabilities for U.S. Government and other sponsors.

The Advanced Concepts Laboratory develops tailored solutions for a broad range of national security challenges through disciplined application of physics- and effects-based modeling to realizable systems, augmented with prototype development and testing. ACL's research thrusts extend across domains, and include bio-, chemical-, RF-, and optical-sensor physics; materials science and engineering; electromagnetic theory, computation, structures, and measurements; electronic warfare techniques and applications; operational scenario modeling and simulation; traditional and asymmetric threat analysis; and ground maneuver warfare.


Required Minimum Qualifications

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Contribute to the design, packaging, and fabrication of chemical and biological sensors and related materials.
  • Derive system/sub-system level requirements to use in the design and testing of chemical and biological sensors and related materials.
  • Assist in managing laboratory activities.
  • Contribute to the generation of white papers and proposals.
  • Contribute to developing presentations and technical reports.
  • Ability to leverage extensive experience and best practices from industry.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Assessment and evaluation of concepts and technologies.
  • Sensor/platform integration.
  • Prototype development.


Intern



  • Pursuing a Bachelor's, Masters or Ph.D degree in Chemistry, Nuclear & Radiological Science/Engineering, or Bioscience
    3.0 or higher GPA
  • Experience working in chemistry and/or biology laboratories
  • Full-Time Intern- Must be registered for Full-time Internship Credit


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in 1 or more of the following programming languages: python, R, java
  • Experience with 1 or more of the following applications: Shiny, MATLAB, VS Code
  • Strong math skills and ability to learn complex science concepts
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of research programs related to chemical or biological threat sensing.
  • Proficiency with algorithm and code development.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use or development of M&S tools to perform critical analysis of technology and system performance.


Hours per Week

40 hours per week


U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.


Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
