The Position

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) has three (3) positions for student intern (part-time - 19 hours per week, when school is in session OR temporary full time - 40 hours per week for 6 months on school breaks) two (2) in the Public Affairs Office and one (1) in the Finance Department.

EBMUD, headquartered in Oakland, is an environmentally and socially progressive, publicly owned utility providing drinking water service to approximately 1.4 million customers in 20 cities and 16 unincorporated communities in portions of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, and wastewater treatment services for more than 740,000 customers in the East Bay.

Finance Department

The Student Intern in the Finance Department will work across teams, including Budget and Performance and Treasury, providing the opportunity to learn more about the world of utility rates and public agency budget analysis. The Finance Student Intern will apply quantitative skills to explore complex financial data, identify trends, and contribute to strategic insights. The intern will engage in cross-functional collaboration to ensure the precision and relevance of their analyses. This internship offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with experienced public finance professionals to enhance EBMUD's understanding of financial and customer usage (water consumption) information. The role is expected to be a hybrid work opportunity if certain conditions are met, with about 40 percent of the time expected to be in-person at the EBMUD headquarters in downtown Oakland.

Public Affairs Office

The Student intern(s) in the Public Affairs Office will work to support customer and K-12 education and outreach efforts by engaging audiences about EBMUD's water, water infrastructure and the importance of using our most vital resource wisely. The intern(s) will staff the EBMUD information booth in association with EBMUD's Water on Wheels mobile drinking fountain at festivals, fairs and other large-scale public events primarily on weekends between May and early November. The intern may also assist with tours of EBMUD facilities, K-12 outdoor education field trips, career fairs, and other EBMUD Public Affairs programs throughout the EBMUD service area.

Organization-specific sample duties include, but are not limited to:

Public Affairs Office:

*Transporting and setting up of EBMUD information booth at public events throughout EBMUD service area.

*Researching and gathering relevant information about EBMUD (history of EBMUD, current talking points, facts about water quality/supply, Customer Assistance Program, Water Conservation, etc.) for use at events.

*Engaging the public, with emphasis on children/students, with informative games and activities to increase their knowledge of water, their water and wastewater systems, and EBMUD.

*Utilizing EBMUD's key messaging about serving the public, investing in infrastructure, and protecting the environment in public communications.

*Assisting the Public Affairs staff in leading K-12 field trips of water treatment facilities and the watershed land.

*Assisting Public Affairs staff with tours, meetings, and other EBMUD events and projects as needed.

*Collaborating with staff from various EBMUD departments as well as staff from other public agencies, school districts, and community groups.

*When possible, photographing public events for social media posts and publications.

Finance Department:

*Based on skills and interest, assignments will be customized to the intern. Example projects could include some or all of the following:

* Cleaning, verifying, confirming, and working with raw data from financial and/or customer systems, or other key financial data in understanding historical trends and projecting future trends.

* Working with analysts skilled in the legal and practical environment related to water and wastewater rates and charges to learn how data informs the rate modeling used for annual and multi-year financial planning.

* Developing ideas for analyzing data that further support work related to long-term financial planning, rate modeling, budgeting processes, and other key financial data.

* Working with other groups in Finance to analyze large datasets to understand trends, set up dashboards or other performance monitoring tools, and more.

Ideal skills needed:

For Student Interns in both the Finance Department and the Public Affairs Office:

*Strong writing skills, proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook).

Ideal Student Intern Candidates for the Finance Department will have:

*Skill in using tools such as Python and Excel to develop models that enhance financial analysis and contribute to organizational success.

*Interest in learning real-world applications of data analysis, data modeling, computer or data science, and related areas of education, especially as it applies to financial trends, financial reporting, rate modeling, and potentially location-based (GIS) applications.

*Interest in a career path related to public finance, public policy, or financial data analysis.

Ideal Student Intern Candidates for the Public Affairs Office will have:

*Familiarity with social media platforms and photography.

*Interest in working with community members and youth from diverse backgrounds.

*General Knowledge of basic principles and terminology related to community engagement.

*Ability to quickly learn the policies, messages, information, and techniques relevant to representing EBMUD to the public; follow oral and written directions; prepare clear and concise communications according to an established format; work cooperatively with others.

*Interest in a career path related to Public Service, Community Outreach, STEAM/Water education, Workforce Development, Communications, or Multimedia.

Requirements

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience, which has led to the acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated above. Typical ways of acquiring these knowledge, skills, and abilities are either:

1.Current enrollment in a four-year college with junior standing or higher with a major related to the available position assignment(s); or,

2.Current enrollment in a graduate degree program related to the available position assignment(s); or,

3.Recent (within 12 months) graduation from a four-year college with a degree related to the available position assignment(s).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must be willing to work paid overtime as needed.

2. Perform other duties as assigned.

3. For Public Affairs Student Interns only:

*Current California driver license and reliable transportation is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Office environment utilizing a computer

2. For Public Affairs Student Interns only:

* Situated outside under a canopy

* Hiking outside over uneven terrain

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:

1. Must possess physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including sitting, standing, or bending for prolonged periods of time.

2. For Public Affairs Student Interns only:

* Must be able to lift and carry 40lbs.including moving, setting up and taking down festival pop-up tent, folding table, and materials.

* Must be able to hike outside over uneven terrain for up to 1 hour.
