Job Title: Surgical Technologist

Location: The George Washington University Hospital, Washington, DC

Overview: As a Surgical Technologist at The George Washington University Hospital, you will be an integral part of our surgical team, assisting in a variety of surgical procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of our patients. The role is critical in maintaining a sterile environment, preparing equipment, and providing support to surgeons and nurses during surgeries.


Qualifications

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Preparation and Set-up: Assist in the preparation of operating rooms by ensuring all necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies are sterile and readily available. Set up surgical tables, lights, and trays according to the specific requirements of each procedure.
  2. Sterile Technique: Maintain a sterile field throughout surgical procedures to minimize the risk of infections and ensure patient safety. Handle instruments and supplies with care, following established protocols for sterilization and handling.
  3. Assistance During Surgery: Pass instruments and supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants during procedures, anticipating their needs and ensuring efficient workflow. Hold retractors, suction fluids, and assist with wound closure as directed by the surgical team.
  4. Instrumentation and Equipment Management: Properly handle and care for surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring they are cleaned, sterilized, and stored appropriately. Assist in the inventory and ordering of supplies to maintain adequate stock levels.
  5. Communication and Collaboration: Communicate effectively with surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other members of the surgical team to coordinate care and ensure patient safety. Collaborate closely with colleagues to maintain a cohesive and efficient work environment.
  6. Patient Care: Assist with positioning and transferring patients on and off the operating table, ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the surgical process. Monitor patients' vital signs and assist with patient positioning as needed.
  7. Emergency Response: Be prepared to respond promptly to emergencies in the operating room, including administering CPR, controlling bleeding, and assisting with patient stabilization as directed by the surgical team.
  8. Adherence to Policies and Regulations: Adhere to hospital policies, protocols, and regulatory requirements related to surgical procedures, infection control, and patient confidentiality. Maintain accurate documentation of surgical procedures and patient care activities.

Qualifications:

  1. Completion of a Surgical Technologist program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or equivalent experience in a surgical setting.
  2. Basic understanding of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and sterile techniques.
  3. Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach to teamwork.
  5. Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
  6. Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure, with a commitment to patient safety and quality care.
  7. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
