Meat Department Leader- Indy Fresh Grocery Store

Indy Fresh Market, is a new full-service grocery store located near the Cook Medical manufacturing facility on 38th and Sheridan. In partnership with Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana (GCSI), the store will provide additional jobs and future educational opportunities for residents while also bringing a much-needed food source to the community.

The Meat Department Leader assists the Store Leader, management team, and staff in executing store operational goals of the annual operating plan. This role makes judgments involving customers, team members, operational issues, business planning, priority setting, and compliance with company policies, as they pertain to the functions, duties, and activities of the meat department. Duties include preparing and displaying quality meat, ordering and rotating stock, ensuring compliance with all regulations and health codes, providing customer service excellence, and assisting the Store Leader in the training and supervising of the activities of the meat department associates. The Meat Department Leader will partner with other leaders in managing the store in the absence of the Store Leader. Leadership roles require availability and flexibility within the site's hours of operation as schedules may change as needed. Some occasional overtime should be expected.

Hours of Operation: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday

Example Duties and Activities

Operations and Compliance - 60%

  • Drives completion of goals while balancing various business needs and adapting to changing needs. Identifies and filters appropriate recommendations for process improvement while maintaining quality standards.

  • Creates, implements, and/or follows merchandising plans that are specific to the department and creates displays for

new and seasonal items to achieve the sales and profit objectives of the store and the department.

  • Adheres to the department's established procedures for receiving merchandise, including inspecting the delivered

products for quality, quantity, and pricing, and restocking cases to maintain product freshness, accuracy, and rotation.

  • Maintains effective housekeeping practices, and ensures products meet all health department regulations and

sanitation standards. Ensures associates work safely and comply with OSHA regulations and local, state, and

government weights and measures laws. Establishes and maintains a safe and clean environment that encourages

customers to return, including the meat-cutting room. Complies with all state, county, and local weights and

measures laws, health codes, and labeling requirements.

  • Integrates, represents, and communicates Goodwill's Mission, Vision, and Values to internal and external customers at all times. Fosters innovation to meet customers' short- and long-term expectations, creating a customer-focused environment that enables customers to feel welcome, important, and appreciated by answering questions regarding products sold within the Meat Department and throughout the store.

  • Practices preventive maintenance by properly inspecting equipment and notifying the Store Leader of any items

needing repair.

  • Adheres to safety protocols, such as wearing appropriate clothing and protective equipment, and follows safe

lifting practices.

  • Reports all safety risks, or issues, and illegal activity, including robbery, theft, or fraud. Notifies leadership of customer or associate accidents.

Staff Management and Development - 30%

  • Maintains a positive culture of open professional communication, immediate resolution of issues, and healthy confrontation within the site.

  • Fosters teamwork in a positive culture. Ensures team members are meeting production quotas through continuous training and development. Communicates site-specific goals and expectations to staff daily. Demonstrates a hands-on leadership approach while coaching and training the Meat Department's hourly employees on daily tasks.

  • Plans, organizes, and directs all activities of department associates including training and developing, maintaining accountability, motivating, monitoring productivity, communicating, and coaching performance. Sets clear expectations while working closely with staff and outside resources to remove any significant work barriers to goal attainment. Communicates with the Store Leader on all performance concerns.

  • Ensures employee performance, conduct, and attendance feedback is provided promptly, and assists the Store Leader with all required performance reviews.

  • Ensures all associates are provided and have completed all training required to perform their jobs, and the training is completed appropriately. Ensures training processes and systems are maintained and continuously improved to enable goal achievement in a high-attrition environment.

  • Notifies Store Leader of potential staffing needs and participates in the hourly associate recruitment process including pre-screening and interviewing candidates, as needed.

  • Seeks out opportunities for professional development for both self and other team members.

Inventory, Reporting, and Records Management - 10%

  • Manages the Meat Department's inventory by monitoring weekly sales reports, and ordering supplies and products to meet the company's gross profit goals and customer requirements.

  • Maintains an awareness of inventory/stocking conditions, implements and enforces shrink mitigation practices, and notes any discrepancies in inventory, ensuring the products are free of any damaged/spoiled/or unattractive items

and maintains accurate pricing and signage.

  • Controls departmental expenses by improving efficiency and operations, managing labor costs, and reducing losses

due to shrinkage and pilferage.

  • Helps identify areas for improvement in the Meat Department, and communicates with the Store Leader to

implement changes and procedures to address them.

  • Maintains accurate records on all important matters such as associate performance and discipline, sales plans,

and others.

Required Competencies

  • Degree and Credential Requirements - High school diploma or GED or willingness to attain and holds a current SERVSAFE certification or is willing to attain.

  • Meat Department Management - Has worked in a leadership role either directly or indirectly overseeing thework of others in a retail meat department. Demonstrates understanding of primary cuts of meat, and the abilityto identify and distinguish between them. Possesses knowledge of meat-cutting principles, including detailed cutsand equipment use. Understands planograms as related to case presentation, ensuring the proper placement and arrangement of products. Upholds the highest level of cleaning and sanitation procedures, and prioritizes associate safety in all activities. Adept at operating equipment such as slicers, cutters, grinders, saws, packaging machines,and scales in a safe manner to prepare products for sale.

  • Coaching - Provides timely guidance and effective feedback to help others strengthen specific knowledge/skill areas needed to accomplish a task or solve a problem.

  • Communication Skills - Articulates thoughts and expresses ideas effectively using oral, written, visual and non-verbal communication skills, as well as listening skills to comprehend customers' needs. Delivers information in person, in writing, and in a digital world.

  • Customer Focus - Has the ability to see, comprehend and relate with customers in an impartial, unbiased yet effective and balanced manner; builds and maintains customer satisfaction with the products and services offered by the organization; provides excellent service to internal and external customers.

  • Technical Knowledge - Has familiarity with computers and relevant software including MS Office Suite and Internet navigation skills. Familiarity with electronic scales is a plus.

  • Planning and Prioritization - Manages competing demands by effectively organizing issues by relevance considering operational objectives and customer service excellence. Excellent time management, planning, scheduling, and coordination skills. Is able to work in a highly structured environment and quickly adapts to changes in priorities or deadlines while maintaining a positive attitude. Effectively navigates complex situations to ensure that tasks are completed on time and to a high standard.

  • Mathematical Aptitude - Is able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Computes rate, ratio, and percent and draws and interprets bar graphs; skids counts, carton counts, and computing total quantities.

  • Results-Oriented - Is compelled to recognize what results are important and what steps need to be taken to achieve set goals or targets.

  • Critical Thinking - Uses judgment and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

  • Ethical - Adheres to procedures and protocol, including maintaining confidentiality in passwords, logging on and off procedures, and adherence to Goodwill's values.

  • Hard to Very Hard Physical Work - Can spend time over 8 hours sitting, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Uses hands to grasp, carry, feel, or touch products and machinery. Has the ability to lift, move, stack, and manipulate items of varying dimensions and weights of 30-70 pounds from floor level to overhead. Can manage frequent exposure to moderate noise and temperature variations due to refrigeration/freezer equipment. Must use tools such as slicers, cutters, grinders, saws, packaging machines, and scales.

  • Minimum of 18 years of age for the operation of industrial kitchen equipment.
