Position:Financial Analyst - Capital Planning & Accounting

Department: Financial Planning and Budget

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Finance Department at Boston Medical Center is seeking a detail oriented analyst who takes initiative and functions well in a collaborative environment. Under the supervision of the Manager of Capital Planning, the Financial Analyst performs the daily and monthly financial functions of the capital planning process, including capital budgeting, project administration, requisition review, and financial reporting preparation. In addition, the Financial Analyst performs all accounting functions related to the reporting of property, plant, and equipment, including journal entry preparation, management of the Asset Management system, financial statement and footnote preparation, as well as ad hoc reporting and analysis. The Financial Analyst works collaboratively with Accounting, Finance, and various departments throughout the Boston Medical Center Health System to ensure efficient use of capital and accurate reporting of property, plant, and equipment.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Capital Planning


  • Monitor and ensure financial policies and procedures are followed within the department; ensure financial information and plans remain confidential

  • Assist in the annual capital budgeting and planning process

  • Administer and review all capital budgets; monitor progress and changes and provide updates to Manager of Capital Planning and Director of Budgeting and Capital Planning on the status of capital issuances

  • Review all capital requisitions for accuracy and confirm that each requisition meets the Health System's policy for capital purchases; assign asset templates to each requisition based on asset location and estimated useful life

  • Participate in the quarterly assessment and review of capital project requests

  • Work with Financial Planning & Analysis team to review and evaluate all strategic initiatives for capital purchases

  • Prepare financial content and analytics for financial presentations to System's Board of Trustees and Finance Committee (capital spend, key ratios, etc.)

  • Maintain policies and procedures related to capital processing

  • Collaborate with Accounting and Budgeting departments to provide clear and precise guidelines to ensure accurate classification for all capital purchases

  • Assist with ad-hoc project related inquiries

  • Maintain Strata Capital Management system and the setup of all capital projects in Infor; perform periodic reconciliations between systems and research any discrepancies

  • Work with Finance Information Systems department to troubleshoot any capital system interface issues

  • Build a comprehensive knowledge base of capital and project accounting software and applications, including Strata Capital Management and Infor Projects

  • Review open balances on capital purchase orders and communicate aging balances with respective departments to ensure efficient use of committed capital

  • Prepare special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends


Accounting


  • Build comprehensive knowledge base of the Asset Management module in Infor

  • Manage monthly close of the Asset Management module for the Boston Medical Center Health System, prepare accruals and other journal entries related to property, plant, and equipment, and coordinate with Accounting as part of the monthly and year-end close process

  • Prepare periodic reconciliations of all property, plant, and equipment accounts

  • Communicate with various departments across the Health System to determine the status of all capital projects at certain period close dates

  • Maintain clear documentation and organized records for all communications and reconciliations related to property, plant, and equipment

  • Prepare financial statement data and footnote support for property, plant, and equipment; assist Accounting in the annual audit; prepare financial reports and responses for audit team as requested

  • Assist in the documentation and maintenance of policies and procedures related to the accounting for and reporting of property, plant, and equipment

  • Collaborate with Accounting, Treasury, and Budgeting Departments in the annual budget process and multi-year forecasting of depreciation expenses

  • Prepare financial content and analytics for presentations to management

  • Other duties as assigned

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

EXPERIENCE:

1-2 years of professional experience in a financial analysis or accounting function; internships included in work experience and experience may be waived for candidates with a Master's degree.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:


  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, with a focus on Excel. Experience with or ability to learn Infor, Strata, and additional application systems.

  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work with individuals with a variety of backgrounds and at all levels of the organization.

  • Proven self-starter; ability to problem solve and manage work with limited supervision.

  • Timely and dedicated work ethic; high degree of integrity.
