The Family Court of St. Louis County is hiring for a Security Officers/DJO (non-merit) position within the Operations Department.

Range 27 Entry salary is $20.00/hour for non-POST Certified Officers, $21.00/hour for POST certified officers. This position within the Family Court/Juvenile Office is eligible for 10% addition to pay.

These positions are funded by the Juvenile Justice Preservation Fund and subject to their continued availability.

Examples of Duties

An employee in this job class is responsible for performing work of moderate difficulty providing security and assistance to Family Court judiciary, staff, and entry screening for the public and staff into the secure detention facility. Work is performed under the supervision of the Security Supervisor. Work involves contact with the public, controlling aggressive and hostile behavior transporting juveniles, serving legal documents, maintaining court room security in the absence of bailiffs, performs bailiff duties for the St. Louis County Court Commissioners. The positions provide additional security for Domestic Violence Court, screens both staff and public for entry into the secure detention facility, fingerprinting, photographing, runs criminal computer checks and following well established rules, regulations and laws. Work is reviewed for adherence to policies and results achieved through observation and work accomplishments. Dress code is business attire.

Patrols and monitors activities occurring in the Family Court Center to observe, prevent, and control potentially hazardous situations.
Provides screening services for visitors, staff and contractors into the secure juvenile detention facility. This position may permanently be assigned to a detention screening position.
Monitors detained youth visitation process in detention.
Reports issues to supervisor on duty.
Guards and transports juveniles to and from other facilities and jurisdictions for purposes of detention, hearings, or other appointments as needed; operates transportation vehicles.
Maintains order in the courtroom to prevent unnecessary noise or disruptions during hearings. Assists and substitutes for bailiffs as needed.
Supervises the behavior of individuals during hearings to ensure the safety and well-being of judges and court personnel.
Takes custody of adults or juveniles, as instructed by the judiciary, to detain for hold-over confinement.
Accompanies staff on visits to juvenile residences and public activities to provide security.
Provides security for specialized dockets of the Family Court.
Provides Courtroom Security for St. Louis County, Family Court Commissioners. This position may be assigned permanently to a courtroom to act as courtroom security.
Prepares all reports and records as required by departmental policy.
Maintains availability by radio for emergency and routine calls for service.
Serves legal documents for the Family Court cases.
Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Two years of responsible law enforcement experience highly preferred. Current or prior POST (Police Officer Standards and Training) certification is highly preferred.
Possession of a valid driver's license. An employee in this position will be deputized as a Deputy Juvenile Officer. This position may be required to carry a firearm, OC spray and Taser.


Additional Information

All applicants conditionally offered a permanent part-time, full-time, term or on-call position will be required to submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. The screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be paid by the County. Applicants will also be required to submit to a background and criminal record check.
