Do you love taking on big challenges that require exceptionally creative solutions? Do you deeply understand how an incredible camera experience should work? As part of our Camera Technologies group, you'll help design the innovative technology that allows each generation of Apple products to produce photos even more incredible than the last. You'll design and develop groundbreaking ideas for everything involved in our camera systems, from sensor to lens. You'll collaborate with teams across Apple to research, design, develop, test, and qualify camera hardware for Apple products. Together, we'll craft a magical photography experience that redefines what millions of customers can expect from their cameras. The Camera Hardware Engineering group is responsible for the design, development, and innovation of camera hardware, including visible and IR illumination technologies that enhance the imaging and depth sensing capabilities of Apple products. We are seeking a Laser Safety Design Engineer for enabling optically safe illumination modules for imaging and depth sensing application. This role requires ability to explore and understand new areas quickly and take responsibility of high-stakes project objectives amid high ambiguity. Ability to work and lead discussions with highly matrixed, multi-functional teams in a fast-paced environment is vital. The ideal applicant will have direct experience in a majority of the areas listed below with knowledge of the others. The primary responsibility of the person in this job is the ownership of end to end laser safety of illumination modules from architecture and design to validation and production.

Key Qualifications

  • Strong background in laser and optical systems engineering
  • Experience with laser/LED optical setups for imaging and depth sensing
  • Proven track record of collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams (optical, electrical, mechanical)
  • Proficiency in Matlab, Python, JMP etc. for data collection and analysis.
  • Experience with an optical modeling software (LightTools, Zemax, CodeV)
  • Working understanding of optical safety standards IEC-60825 and IEC-62471
  • Expertise in manufacturing statistics/Monte Carlo simulations
  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing of consumer electronics is a plus
  • Experience in custom silicon design is a plus


Description

- Design & implement optical and electrical subsystems for mitigating optical hazards - Develop detailed module architecture specifications - Use analytical methods (FMEA, FTA) to track use cases and failure modes that violate laser safety compliance - Validate optical safety architecture using simulations (LightTools, Zemax, Matlab) and experimental lab setups - Stay abreast of the latest industry optical radiation safety specifications such as IEC-60825, IEC-62471, IEC-62368 - Collaborate with x-functional teams (system, optical, electrical, product safety, firmware, operations) to understand and solve issues related to design and implementation of laser safety architecture and processes - Generate component, module and system level design, process and test compliance documentation to enable manufacturability in high volume

Education & Experience

BS and a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience

  • At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $138,900.00 and $256,500.00, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
