This job is responsible for offering spiritual care to patients, families, staff and visitors. The resident spends at least 13 hours per week in formal supervised training at a graduate level and a minimum of 36 hours each week in clinical responsibility meeting the clinical care needs in a practical setting of learning by doing the work of the chaplain in the hospital. The resident is expected to demonstrate their growing competence as an interfaith resource and assist in family conferences and other staff needs. The candidate for this position should demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly on all levels both orally and in writing and have excellent interpersonal skills in assisting in managing their own anxiety while being a calming, reflective listener to others. The person should demonstrate an ability to work without supervision and demonstrate an ability to problem solve difficult situations. He or she should have basic computer skills needed to perform the duties of his or her role in the hospital. The person should demonstrate an interest in learning both academically and from the patients, families and staff members in the hospital setting. The person must be able to abide by the expectations and standards of the national ACPE program and the policies of Ochsner.

Education

Required -High School diploma or equivalent

Preferred - Masters' Degree in Theology

Work Experience
Required -Experience in offering Spiritual Care or Emotional Support to individuals in Crisis. Experience in leadership positions within his or her faith group. Verbal and written communication skills in English at a High School reading level. Ability to time manage and assess the basic needs of the clinical unit under his or her assignment. Prepared academically to engage graduate level curriculum to meet his or her learning goals leading toward professional chaplaincy certification.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information. Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Good organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to function under pressure situations, be able to advocate for the needs of those under his or her service area of responsibility and to possess the ability to problem solve independently to improve operations. The person should their work as enhancing the values, vision and mission of the organization.
  • *Abilityto move about freely, to lift and carry 5 - 15 pounds when handling office supplies, able to stand or long periods of time and to walk long distances, occasionally travel to off-campus locations, and work in a variety of medical environment that may include the need for protective medical clothing, face masks, and various cleansing practices for the protection of the person and the ones he or she serves.

Job Duties
* Offers spiritual Care to patients, families, staff and visitors. Makes appropriate referrals to other community clergy at he request o the patient and or family member within the limits of Ochsner's confidentiality policy.
*Offers bereavement care at the time leading up to the death of a patient and some follow up care afterwards. This care includes but is not limited to assisting in family consultative process with the medical staff, discussing advance directives, comforting the family, advocating for spiritual needs, etc.
* Administers functions such as charting all visits and maintaining accurate statistical records of his or her time utilization while involved in the CPE program.
* Offers worship and or coordinating the various religious services which may be needed in support of patients, families, staff and visitors. Other special services may from time to time be offered as needed such as baptisms, various formal blessings, memorial services, Martin Luther King, Jr. Services, and other special celebrations
* Demonstrates good communication skills, personal integrity, and interpersonal skills in exercising good judgment while clarifying issues involved in demonstrating Ochsner's commitment to respecting the religious, cultural and psycho-social uniqueness of the patients, families, staff and visitors in the medical center.
* The person must be academically prepared for the graduate level study of the art of spiritual care and accepted as a candidate for the CPE program according to the standards of the National ACPE, Inc. education program as administered by Ochsner's CPE Center through the department of Spiritual Care and Education.

Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.
